> [Twitter] Grammys: Imogen Heap Accepts Award Wearing “Twitter Dress”

Mashable -- Grammys: Imogen Heap Accepts Award Wearing "Twitter Dress"

The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards will air its televised portion tonight at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST, but the non-televised portion of the awards are already streaming live on the web. One of the early social media hat tips in evidence comes from artist Imogen Heap, who accepted an award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical wearing a specially crafted "Twitter Dress."

The dress, which has its own Twitter feed, displays Twitter pics sent by fans in real-time using the hashtag #twitdress. The artist uploaded a pic of the "dress in progress" to her yfrog account last night (pictured below), with Twitpic being used to handle the extensive stream of fan-submitted pics. She tweeted to earlier this morning that the dress was envisioned as a way to let fans "accompany me on the red carpet."

The Twitdress idea is nothing if not a creative way to incorporate social media into the Grammys experience and — literally — bring the fans with an artist onto the stage. And besides — why let Lady Gaga have all the fun with the crazy outfits? Then again, if anyone is prepared to top the Twitter dress for craziest Grammy attire, it could be the Gaga — we'll be watching to see if she whips out some Facebook shoes, or maybe a Youtube hat. Stay tuned!

TechCrunch -- Google Labs Adds Search Icon To ?Compose Mail? Window In Gmail

Orli Yakuel noticed that Google has quietly added a new icon in the 'Compose Mail' window of its free webmail service Gmail, enabling users to run search queries from within the interface and insert results and URLs straight into drafted e-mails or open chat conversations. This is an expansion of a Google Labs feature, simply dubbed 'Google Search', that was introduced back in April 2009 as an optional setting in Gmail.

> [Twitter] On eBay, Twitter Followers Are Worth Less Than A Penny Each

TechCrunch -- On eBay, Twitter Followers Are Worth Less Than A Penny Each

It used to be that Twitter followers were worth something, or at least people thought they were worth something, which is the same thing. It was only about a year ago when Jason Calacanis was offering $250,000 to buy a spot on Twitter's Suggested User List, which would have guaranteed him perhaps a million followers before Twitter ended up revamping the SUL to be less monolithic. He never got on the list, but if his offer would have come to roughly $0.25 per follower. Today, you can "buy" followers on eBay for less than a penny each. Some of the Buy-It-Now listings include 5,000 followers for $20 (which comes to 0.4 penny/follower), $5,500 for $40 (0.7 penny/follower), $1,100 for $10 (0.9 penny/follower). You are not actually buying followers outright (Twitter doesn't allow people to transfer their followers), but rather services which "guarantee" getting your account up to the promised number of followers through "proven and safe methods." Some even only count reciprocal followers (followers who follow back).

> [Twitter] Haiti, iPad, and Obama: The Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week

Mashable -- Haiti, iPad, and Obama: The Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week

Out of all the social media tools out there, the one that people go to in order to figure out what's hot on the web has to be Twitter. With millions of tweets crossing its servers and constantly updated trending topics, it's easy to find out what's happening right now.

We're taking it a step further with a new series, Top Twitter Topics, a weekly recap of what people were buzzing about in the Twitterverse. Thanks to What The Trend, we know what events captured our collective attention.

What Was Hot This Week

Last week, Haiti and the Shorty Awards topped Twitter trends, with MLK day, the Golden Globes, and the Massachusetts special election all making appearance.

We've changed our analysis formula a little since then. This week, we've consolidated top trends and are utilizing a point system conceived by What the Trend that weighs time spent trending against how high related terms trended.

Here are some highlights from this week's list:

- Haiti, relief efforts, and raising money to help remain the top topic of discussion.

- Unsurprisingly, the #2 topic of discussion was the iPad, along with discussion about the keynote and jokes about the product's name.

- Obama's State of the Union ranks in at #3. This confirms data we published yesterday: Steve Jobs beat Obama in buzz.

- Sadly, at #9 is "RIP Johnny Depp," a hoax celebrity death that picked up steam and fooled way too many people.

Predictions: What Will Be Popular Next Week

1. The iPad: What, you think people won't be buzzing about Apple's new device a week from now?

2. The Grammys: I was a week off on last week's prediction; now the buzz is starting to build.

3. Super Bowl: The big game is coming

4. Haiti: The people of the island nation still need our help.

5. Justin Bieber: The 15 year old singing phenomenon was discovered on YouTube, and his fans are as passionate as Twilight or Jonas Brothers fans. Be very afraid.

> [Firefox] Firefox for Mobile Makes Its Debut

Mashable -- Firefox for Mobile Makes Its Debut

Want the power and add-ons of the Firefox browser in the palm of your hands? That dream is quickly becoming a reality, starting with the Maemo OS and owners of the Nokia N900.

Mozilla has officially introduced Firefox for Maemo, the first officially launched version of Firefox for Mobile. It's been in testing for some time, but now it's available for download for those of you who own an N900 smartphone.

The new mobile browser comes equipped with an array of quite awesome features: the awesome bar, weave sync (sync your bookmarks, passwords, tabs, and history between mobile and desktop), tabbed browsing, and location-aware maps are all part of this launch.

Our favorite feature of the Firefox for Mobile launch though has to be the inclusion of add-ons. Yes, you'll be able to customize your mobile browsing experience with add-ons like TwitterBar, AdBlock Plus, and YouTube Enabler. There is a Firefox mobile add-on website with around 40 add-ons, but the number is growing.

If you're not an N900 owner but want Firefox on your iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or other smartphone, we have some good news and some bad news. The good news: Firefox is investigating Android and launching for other mobile phones soon. The bad news: don't expect them on the BlackBerry or iPhone anytime soon.

Reviews: Adblock Plus, Android, Firefox

> [Twitter] 4 New Mac Twitter Apps You May Have Missed

Mashable -- 4 New Mac Twitter Apps You May Have Missed

Just when you think you've tried every Twitter app out there, a few more appear on the scene. For Mac users that might have either grown tired of, or are looking for alternatives to, Tweetie, Twitterrific, Kiwi or Socialite, never fear, there are indeed other native Mac OS X options out there!

While some of the best Twitter apps, in terms of power, are still the Adobe Air-based Seesmic Desktop and Tweetdeck, there are also some great, free native OS X clients (and one that runs on Mozilla's XUL platform) worth checking out.

1. Itsy

Itsy is for the Twitter minimalist — someone who wants to have the ability to send a tweet, view @replies and maybe perform a search, but doesn't want the app to take up tons of real-estate or attention. The app has a very small footprint, both in terms of memory and screen size, and offers up the basic Twitter features. Plus, it supports Growl notifications and keyboard shortcuts. If you want something simple and something that will stay out of your way, this just might be your app.

Itsy is free and requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.

2. Twitt

Twitt is a Twitter app for the Mac user who appreciates a good user interface and likes the ability to customize or theme his apps. Like Kiwi, Twitt supports HTML+CSS themes that are easy to install and change around. The app has the basic Twitter features covered, but adds a few things that power users should like too.

For instance, if you like to share photos via Twitter, you can use the built-in image uploader to send stuff to TwitPic or yFrog. It also supports multiple accounts, Growl, offline reading, the official Retweet button, plus you can set up notifications for certain content and create filters to prevent certain stuff from showing up in your timeline.

The only real feature that Twit lacks is Lists support, but as it stands, most native Mac apps don't do that yet anyway. Twitt is free.

3. Echofon for Mac

Echofon for Mac is a desktop version of the popular iPhone app. The two apps share a lot of similarities, lots of features, and a clean, if not mindblowingly-awesome user interface. Echofon has a really nice browser drawer that can slide out of the side of the client, showing off conversation history or user information or user timelines, without obstructing your other screen. This is a great compromise between either having something always open in a browser, or the menu and column madness that some of the more powerful Twitter apps use.

Like Twitt, you can easily drag and drop to upload photos, a feature that's a nice touch and something that many desktop clients ignore. You can also easily look at Twitter trending topics or view your saved searches from within the app, a feature that's really handy.

If you use Echofon Pro for the iPhone, you can sync you r unread tweets. And if you send an @reply or direct message to someone using Echofon for the iPhone, they can receive a push notification of your tweet instantly. Again, the only real feature that Echofon lacks is Lists support, but if that gets added, this will be a real competitor to the power-user apps.

Echofon is still in beta and is free right now. Full pricing details will be announced in the future.

4. Yoono Desktop

Yoono Desktop is a desktop version of the popular Firefox add-on and it actually controls more than just Twitter. It also supports Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger and MySpace IM. The nice thing about Yoono is that you can update your status across networks and connect to all networks at once. It also supports real-time search across your different networks.

As a desktop app, Yoono includes most of the big features that came in the Firefox add-on. Unlike the other apps in this round-up, Yoono is not written using Cocoa — it's based on Mozilla's XUL-runner framework. That's the same base that Firefox and Thunderbird use. I mention this because some of the interface features are going to differ — similar to what happens when you run Adobe Air apps. However, while XUL still tends to be poor with memory management in Mac OS X, it's nowhere near as bad as Adobe Air. Use rs who want a powerful client that isn't Air-based, this might be fore you.

Yoonoo can be run in a more compact space, but it really likes to take over as much of your screen real-estate as you can give it. Depending on what you like to monitor, that may or may not suit your needs. Still, for a power Twitter client that isn't based on Adobe Air, Yoono is a great option. Mac users should also check out the Firefox add-on if you want a slightly more integrated approach.

> [Google] In Depth: 10 handy tips for Google Chrome beginners

TechRadar -- In Depth: 10 handy tips for Google Chrome beginners

Google's Chrome browser is marketed as a streamlined browser that removes all unnecessary bloat in order to maximise its speed on the web.

But its lack of bells and whistles shouldn't be misinterpreted as a lack of functionality. There are still plenty of ways that you can tweak Chrome to suit your own surfing habits..

1. Useful Chrome shortcuts

As with other browsers, you can use keyboard shortcuts to save time. Use [Ctrl]+[B] to toggle the Bookmarks bar, [Shift]+[Esc] to open Chrome's Task Manager and [Ctrl]+[J] to bring up the Downloads window. Move the cursor without moving your mouse by using [Ctrl]+[L] to switch to the address bar and [Ctrl]+[K] to move the cursor to the search box.

There are also plenty of tab-related shortcuts: [Ctrl]+[T] opens a new tab, [Ctrl]+[N] opens a new window, [Ctrl]+[Shift]+[T] reopens the last-closed tab, [C trl]+[Tab] cycles through open tabs and [Ctrl]+[W] closes the current tab. Perfect for speeding up your surfing.

2. Faster searching

Google is, of course, best known for its search engine, and Chrome aims to make search as easy as possible. You can search the web by simply typing a term into the address box, or you can search a particular site by entering the domain and then pressing [Tab]. You can use keyword shortcuts to search using a particular search engine; right-click in the address bar and select 'Edit Search Engines' to add or remove search engines and assign keywords to them.

3. Customised home tab

Like Opera, Chrome has a nifty feature that displays a grid of your most frequently visited sites when you open a new tab. This grid is not fixed, and you can make it how you'd like by dragging and dropping the thumbnails to rearrange them, pinning thumbnails to specific locations by using the Pin button or chan ging the grid to a simpler list view with the View button.

4. Multiple homepages

Got a set of sites you visit every day? Well, why not customise Chrome to open your favourite sites in their own tabs when you start the browser? Go to the Options menu and under the Basics tab, tick the radio button for 'Open the Following pages' and then add whichever sites you want to open on startup. You can also make the browser open up the pages you were viewing before you finished your last browsing session instead.

5. Easy downloading

All browsers save files where they think is best, which may not be where you want them saved. To change the default download location, go into Options, click on the Minor Tweaks tab and set a new custom download location. A rather handy alternative to this is the ability to drag and drop downloads out of the status bar straight onto your desktop or an Explorer window.

6. Add some col our

Chrome's interface is pretty minimal, so if you're one for customisation then you'll be pleased to hear that you can easily change the look and feel of the browser using themes. Click on the Spanner tool, choose 'Personal options' and then click 'Get themes'. Once you've found a theme you like, click the 'Apply theme' button to instantly transform your browser.

7. Protect your privacy

Everyone knows about the potential tracking problems of cookies and adverts, but did you know that each Chrome install has a unique ID, making it a very simple matter to track what you are doing? If this is something that worries you then fear not, because there is a solution: Chrome Privacy Guard. Once installed, the tool scans inside your Chrome install and removes the unique client ID; just run the 'ChromePrivacy Guard.exe' file instead of the normal Chrome executable.

8. Create shortcuts

You can use Chrome to create desktop shortcuts to your favourite web applications such as Google Mail, Flickr, Twitter and so on. Once launched, the app will appear in its own separate window without any of Chrome's usual toolbars, tabs and bookmarks, but any links you click on will open a new tab instance in Chrome. To create a shortcut, go to the site you want to make the shortcut to, go to the Page menu and choose 'Create application shortcuts'. You will have the option of saving the shortcut to the desktop, Quick Launch bar or Start menu.

9. Get Chrome extensions

Like Firefox, Chrome supports plug-ins, although this is still in an early stage. Type about:plugins in the address bar to see what plug-ins, if any, are currently installed. You can get Google Chrome extensions from the official repository. If you want to build your own extension, have a look at www.chromeextensionsdocs.appspot.com.

10. Explore the program

Want to know what's going on deep inside Chrome? For general information on the browser, type about:' into the address bar. You should see some basic information about the browser's build, the V8 JavaScript engine and so on. This command can be used to retrieve information about specific elements of the app, as we saw above. For example, to see how well the browser's DNS pre-fetching system is currently working, enter about:dns.

In a blog post, Rajen Sheth, Google Apps senior product manager, said that support for IE6 in Google Docs and Google Sites will end March 1. At that point, IE6 users who try to access Docs or Sites may find that 'key functionality' won't work properly. Sheth suggested that customers upgrade their browsers to pretty much anything else."

Mashable -- Doppelganger Week on Facebook: Better Than Sharing Your Bra Color?

Facebook users have found a way to top the sharing your bra color meme: Celebrity Doppelganger Week.

We've been seeing status update after status update about this new meme pop up into our Facebook feeds. A quick search of Facebook explains exactly what's going on:

"Doppelganger week! During this week change your profile picture to someone famous (actor, musician, athlete) you have been told you look like…. and repost this message."

We have no idea how it started, and frankly we don't care: the result is still both interesting and hilarious, depending on who your friends think they look like. We've seen posts on this all the way back to Tuesday, but it only recently picked up steam.

It is actually better than the Bra Color Facebook Status meme? We're kind of fond of the bra color meme, but guys and girls alike are jumping on the doppelganger bandwagon. Let us know what you think of this newest trend in the comments.

TechCrunch -- The iPad And Chrome OS Netbooks Are On A Collision Course

"We don't know how to build a $500 computer that's not a piece of junk." "Netbooks aren't better at anything." Those two quotes are both from Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The first was during an earnings call in late 2008 when Jobs fielded a question about why Apple wasn't cutting prices amid the rising success of netbooks. The second came on Wednesday as Jobs was unveiling the iPad. Apple has made it clear all along that they had no plans to build a netbook. And true to their word, they haven't. But that doesn't mean that Apple didn't feel there was a need for a device that resided in between a full laptop and a mobile phone ? in fact, that's squarely where Apple is positioning the iPad. With it, they feel that they've created a $500 (for the baseline version) device that is superior to every netbook out there.

TechCrunch -- Topicfire Creates Solid Breaking News Twitter Feeds For All Topics

A lot of people use Twitter as a primary way of getting information quickly these days. Accounts such as BreakingNews are hugely popular because they offer up stories to their 1.6 million followers (and even more through retweets) instantaneously. Topicfire, a realtime news aggregator we covered in December is now trying to extend that concept to all different topics. While there are no shortage of services attempting to leverage Twitter to distill information for different topics, Topicfire's streams seem pretty solid thanks to the use of their HeatRank technology, which is the same thing that powers Topicfire itself. While there are a few factors that go into HeatRank, the main driving force behind it are comments on stories. If they're coming in fast enough, the HeatRank will get pushed to 10.

TechCrunch -- Google Twists Knife In IE6, Pulls Support From Docs And Sites

This has not been the greatest start to the year for Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. Days after news of the latest security flaw in Internet Explorer, Google is adding fuel to the fire by phasing out support for IE6 for two of its Google Apps products, Docs and Sites (which recently got an aesthetic upgrade). For both the consumer and enterprise versions of Google Docs and Sites, the only browsers that will be fully compatible are Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0+, Mozilla Firefox 3.0+, Google Chrome 4.0+ and Safari 3.0+. The phase out will take place beginning March 1. While you'll still be able to access Docs and Sites from IE6, you will have restricted functionality and many features won't work, making the applications for the most part useless. We hear that Google will be phasing out IE6 support for the remainder of Google's major products, including Gmail and Calendar, over the coming year. This isn't Google's first move to phases out IE6 functionality for its products. Last July, the search giant began phasing out YouTube support for the Microsoft browser. For users of IE6, the online video site began pointing to ?modern? browsers like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8 and Fi refox 3.5 as alternatives. A similar prompt will now take place on Docs and Sites for users who are browsing from IE6.

Mashable -- National Lady Gaga Day Draws 100,000+ on Facebook

More than 100,000 people on Facebook have declared today National Lady Gaga Day. It's difficult to be sure what this day entails exactly, but presumably elaborate costumes will be part of it. Point is, it's gone sort of viral. Gaga is everywhere now.

Student Sarah Jane Elliott founded the Facebook event, and as we're writing this post 105,147 have RSVPed as confirmed guests. There are 14,398 "Maybes." The day is described as an opportunity to "dress like her, sing, dance, have themed parties, wear a kermit the frog jacket" and "celebrate our 'inner freak' that Gaga allows (and wants) us to be."

While the event started on Facebook, it doesn't end there. We're seeing a bunch of tweets about it, including one from Gaga herself. She thanked her fans, saying: "Thank u for creating #nationalladygagaday little monsters! I love u with all my gaga heart."

Friday is a great day for this; don't be surprised if you hear some Lady Gaga in the clubs tonight. So go and dance, lovers of Lady Gaga.

Slashdot -- Google To Pay $500 For Bugs Found In Chromium

Trailrunner7 writes to mention that a new program from Google could pay security researchers $500 for every security bug found in Chromium. Of course if you find a particularly clever bug you could be eligible for a $1337 reward. "Today, we are introducing an experimental new incentive for external researchers to participate. We will be rewarding select interesting and original vulnerabilities reported to us by the security research community. For existing contributors to Chromium security ? who would likely continue to contribute regardless ? this may be seen as a token of our appreciation. In addition, we are hoping that the introduction of this program will encourage new individuals to participate in Chromium security. The more people involved in scrutinizing Chromium's code and behavior, the more secure our millions of users will be. Such a concept is not new; we'd like to give serious kudos to the folks at Mozilla for their long-running and successful vulnerability rewar d program."

> [Facebook] Your Friend’s Ex-Girlfriend is Spreading a Virus on Facebook [WARNING]

Mashable -- Your Friend's Ex-Girlfriend is Spreading a Virus on Facebook [WARNING]

Despite what you may be reading on Facebook today, your friend isn't trying to exact revenge on his super hot cheating ex-girlfriend. It's a worm. So DO NOT click that suspicious — albeit very tempting — Facebook status update.

The new Facebook worm is spreading virally — you can do a Facebook search for "ex-girlfriend cheated" to see all the public posts roll in — among users who are falling for the ex-girlfriend revenge bait. The malicious status update to avoid reads:

"My Ex-Girlfriend Cheated on me… Here is my revenge!"

If you were to click on the link, the very same status update will get posted to your account and perpetuate the problem. Hence the viral spread of this Facebook worm.

Unfortunately, Nick O'Neill at AllFacebook counts himself among those victimized. Here's what he wrote about the experience:

"In the past hour I've noticed multiple users who have posted a message stating 'My Ex-Girlfriend Cheated on me… Here is my revenge!' The image was not of their ex though. As a curious individual, I decided to click on the link to see if it was a virus or something else. The result was that I ended up posting the article to my profile and now it's spreading around Facebook.

The key here is to not click the link if you see it on your friends' profiles or on your homepage. By using some creative CSS and an iFrame, this developer has triggered the 'share' event every time a person clicks on the image displayed on the page. It's a really creative trick, and one that I'm sure Facebook will block in a short amount of time but you should defini tely be aware of the issue."

If you've fallen victim to this ploy, you're not alone, but we advise you to delete the update and change your password immediately. We've also reached out to Facebook for comment and will update this post when we know more.

Update: Facebook is addressing the issue and working to remove the posts. Simon Axten from Facebook responded to our inquiry saying, "We've blocked the URL associated with this site, and we're cleaning up the relatively few cases where it was posted (something email providers, for example, can't do). Overall, an extremely small percentage of users were affected. As always, we're asking people not to click on suspicious links, even if they've been sent or posted by friends. You'll find this tip and others on the Facebook Security Page: http://www.facebook.com/security."

> [Facebook] How Facebook Can Become a Money Making Machine

Mashable -- How Facebook Can Become a Money Making Machine

Dallas Lawrence is Chair of the Social and Digital Media Practice at Levick Strategic Communications, the nation's top crisis communications firm. He blogs on emerging digital media trends and best practices for social media engagement on Bulletproof Blog. Connect with him on Twitter @dallaslawrence.

Social networks have truly come of age in the last year. No longer viewed as lonely outposts for youthful college slackers, the reach of these platforms has grown exponentially. Today, more than two-thirds of the world's Internet users visit the social networking sites that reel in billions of eyeballs every 24 hours.

Yet, despite the staggering growth of social networking, determining how to monetize social media platforms remains a tough code to crack for even the savviest of companies. As such, identifying new revenue models will be instrumental in kicking off the next cycle of the social networking phenomenon in 2010.

If Anyone Can Do It, Facebook Can

Facebook, social networking's acknowledged leader, has surpassed every platform on the market today, corralling more than 350 million unique users globally. If any social network is poised to design a winning formula for successful revenue streams in 2010, it's Facebook. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has set an aggressive agenda for the company, publically stating that he "expects social networks to become as essential as web browsers and operating systems," and he has set the lofty — yet entirely realistic — goal of 1 billion users worldwide.

In the less than five years since it expanded beyond scholastic audiences, Facebook has not only grabbed the lion's share of users, it has engaged them like no other platform on the Internet. The average Facebook user visits the site at least once a day and spends an astounding 55 minutes engaging friends and family –- statistics that another Zucker (Jeff) would probably kill for over at NBC.

While translating such popularity into dollars and cents isn't easy –- especially in an industry whose users have grown accustomed to getting something for nothing –- Facebook could potentially provide a monetization template that would revolutionize social networking as we know it.

The Next Level of Advertising Revenue

Advertising has traditionally provided the simplest means of generating revenue. PricewaterhouseCoopers reported in October that Internet advertising revenues totaled $10.9 billion for the first half of 2009. It's been estimated that Facebook alone took in $435 million of that total. But for a site with nearly half a billion users, a quarter of which spend more time within the network than watching television, these numbers represent just the beginning potential.

First, Facebook needs to admit to itself that it is in the business of selling ads. By better managing its advertising network, intelligently expanding its marketing options, and developing workable social ads that leverage the branding power of friends and connections, Facebook can begin to capture its rightful share of online ad revenues. The final piece is to increase awareness and understanding of Facebook ads among corporate decision makers.

For example, every executive in America today understands the value of purchasing Google ads –- and that didn't happen by accident. Google understood that what caused it to dominate online search wasn't going to ultimately position the company as a glob al corporate powerhouse valued at nearly $200 billion. Google's aggressive marketing, communications, and lobbying shops have worked to ensure every ad buyer, political campaign, marketing executive, and public relations flack knows the value of the service and has direct and easy access to account executives who explain the much worshiped "ROI" Google ads provide.

Today, Facebook stands on the precipice Google inhabited just before it became a top money-maker. By taking a page from the Google playbook, and aggressively marketing — and explaining — its power to influence buying decisions, Facebook ads could become as essential to 21st Century marketing as the yellow pages were in the 20th Century.

E-Commerce – Stop Sending Customers Away

The launch of Facebook as a true e-commerce site holds immense potential as a business solution and could forever change the way we shop. Online purchases through the first three quarters of 2009 totaled $98.3 b illion according to the Department of Commerce. For the majority of companies selling products online who are also engaged on Facebook, opening Facebook fully to direct e-commerce transactions will dramatically change how businesses advertise and how consumers buy goods online.

Consumers and companies would flock to a Facebook storefront for one simple reason: We do everything else there. Imagine an integrated, one-click solution whereby your friends see your recent purchases (because you were incentivized by the brand to share your information) in their feed and are able to simply point, click, and purchase the same item.

With a few adjustments, companies can make timely offers of birthday gifts for friends, travel arrangements for event items, or the latest music from favorite artists –- and make the sale without forcing the user to leave Facebook or put in new login information.

Rather than driving their 350 million users away from the platform to "close the deal" with retailers and purchase the item on an external platform, Facebook could benefit financially by charging companies a percentage of sales, a fixed rate to have a storefront, or from increased advertising opportunities.

Premium Subscription Options

Finally, whether users like it or not, Facebook will do itself a long term disservice if it does not consider premium subscription options. Users (whether they are corporations or teenagers) are amenable to paying for even the simplest features and functionality, as evidenced by the success of Facebook gifts.

Nothing good in life is free. It's a stark, mature reality that Facebook (and its users) need to face in 2010. By leveraging economies of scale, Facebook can churn a sizable profit without alienating users. Would you pay one dollar a month to share higher-resolution photos or upload higher-quality or longer vide os? Last month, 2.5 billion photos were uploaded to Facebook. Even if only a quarter of the site's active users opted for premium options, this one change would generate more than $1 billion in annual revenues.

Improving advertising, developing an e-commerce platform, and adding subscription services will not only generate the revenue necessary to make the transition from highly adopted to highly profitable, it will open revenue streams — as Google did before — for the next generation of digital developments.

> [Chrome] Exclusive: Strongest hint yet: Chrome OS to go touch

TechRadar -- Exclusive: Strongest hint yet: Chrome OS to go touch

Google has given the strongest hint yet that there will be touch options for Chrome OS.

During a talk attended by TechRadar at Google's London HQ, Anders Sandholm, Senior Product Manager of Search based in Aarhus, Denmark, was clearly at a loss as to how to answer a direct question about touch without giving something away.

When asked the question, Sandholm looked to a PR helper, chuckled nervously and said "I can't... I mean... right now we are targeting netbooks, that's what we're focused on, but I expect it to work well... we expect it to target everything up to desktop computers.

"Chrome OS will be built for a specific hardware setup."

Rumours have abounded, some saying that HTC is already testing a Chrome OS tablet, others saying that an official "Google netbook" will have a 10.1-inch multi-touch screen.

Anders sandholm, senior product manager of search at google

This is a change in tone from two months ago when Sandholm told TechRadar, "I'm sure that something is being discussed [about touch input], but I'm not exactly sure what the outcome is going to be,"

And as for the variety of devices that will be available with Chrome OS from launch, Sandholm said "That's still being discussed with our OEM partners. For sure the first devices will be netbook-based."

Chris Dibona, Head of Open Source at Google said Google was definitely working with Asus, Acer, HP "and maybe MSI" when quizzed about the companies Google was working with.

Rumours of touch-based Chrome OS devices hitting t he market have been common, but nothing has been confirmed by Google, evidently keen not to appear to be getting ahead of itself.

"A perfect storm"

Sandholm added that Chrome OS was emerging in a time that represents "a perfect storm of converging trends" caused by a need for cheaper machines, the rise and rise of netbooks and the amount of data now stored in the cloud.

"Now most work is done in the browser," added Sandholm. "Rather than just building a browser, we thought why not try to recreate the operating system itself? In many ways it's something completely different [from the Chrome browser] but it's the same in that were going for speed, efficiency and security."

Sandholm wasn't convincing when asked how Chrome OS responds to not being connected to the internet ? does it work? Surprisingly, he said that "the simple answer is that it doesn't" when HTML 5 is specifically designed to perform many of the offline functions that Go ogle Gears has done ? such as offline email browsing in Gmail.

"We hope people will get excited about it and improve it and find mistakes and tell us about [them]," added Sandholm. "We are also hoping to push hardware vendors to have more open source drivers."

TechRadar also spoke at length to Chris Dibona about all things Android, Chrome OS, Wave and more - we'll publish a full interview with him next week, so keep checking back for your next Chrome OS fix.

> [Google] Motorola behind Google's Nexus Two phone?

TechRadar -- Motorola behind Google's Nexus Two phone?

Motorola could be in line to bring out the Nexus Two, after its CEO confirmed that it will be bringing a phone to the Google store.

Sanjay Jha confirmed that the company is working on bringing 20 smartphones in 2010, and also that one will be "one direct to consumer device with Google."

Google itself hinted at such a possibility at the launch of the Nexus One (which is designed by HTC) but this is the first time we've got confirmation of another player in the Nexus game.

Project Shadow

There have been (spurious) rumours that Motorola is working on a project, codenamed Shadow, which could turn into the Nexus Two - but given Motorola's penchant for a QWERTY keyboard, you'd have to assume it's possible that the company could be behind a more business-focused handset.

The phone will likely be unveiled in the first half this year, as Google looks to cement the new business model it's crafted in creating its own phone store.

Motorola recently posted a small profit for Q4 this year, which shows that the company previously considered to be on its last legs might still stage a miraculous turnaround yet.

CWmike writes "Google has announced that it added several new security features to Chrome 4, including two security measures first popularized (some later shot down as having 'zero impact') by rival Microsoft's IE8 last year. The newest 'stable' build of Chrome includes five security additions that target Web developers who want to build more secure sites, said Adam Barth, a software engineer on the Chrome team. The two aped from IE include 'X-Frame-Options'" a security feature that helps sites defend against 'clickjacking' attacks, and cross-site scripting protection.'"In Google Chrome 4, we've added an experimental feature to help mitigate one form of XSS [cross-site scripting], reflective XSS,' Barth said. 'The XSS filter checks whether a script that's about to run on a Web page is also present in the request that fetched that Web page. If the script is present in the request, that's a strong indication that the Web server might have been tricked into reflecting the script .'"

TechCrunch -- PhoneTag?s Automated Voice-to-Text Service Is Only 86 Percent Accurate, But That?s Better Than Google Voice

Computer voice-to-text technology has come a long way, and every time it gets better, new applications open up. It is still not 100 percent accurate. Hell, it's not even 90 percent accurate. But it is accurate enough for automated voicemail transcription services to become increasingly available and good enough not to have to listen through 15 voicemails to get the gist of what they are about.  Of course, voicemails are often translated incorrectly, sometimes to comic effect. In a study comparing the accuracy of four different voice-to-text technologies (Google Voice, Preview in Microsoft Exchange, Ditech's PhoneTag, and Yap) the one which came out on top was PhoneTag, which is now part of Ditech Networks. PhoneTag showed an 86 percent accuracy rate in translating 500 spoken messages into text. Google Voice was only able to achieve an 82 percent accuracy in its voice-to-text translations.  The study only evaluated purely automated voice-to-text systems.  Here's how all four fared:

Tim Tebow's Super Bowl ad is still garnering its share of controversy, despite the fact that no one has seen it.

Currently, Americans United for Life Action, the first national pro-life organization on America, and LifeNews.com, a news source for the pro-life community, have more than 38,000 fans on their Facebook page, "Support Tebow's Super Bowl Ad."

As we reported the other day, the Internet has been all aflutter as of late over an ad featuring college football star, Tim Tebow. In the ad, which is being paid for by Focus on the Family, Tebow and his mother explain how he would have never been born if his mother (who was not in good health) had had an abortion.

The ad is to air on CBS during the Big Game, and a variety of factions are up in arms: everyone from pro choice groups to religiously inclined groups, like this one, who is angry because CBS once rejected an ad from the United Church of Christ. Parodies are even beginning to emerge.

Still, there are several groups, like Americans United for Life Action, rallying to keep the spot on the air in an attempt to maintain free speech, they say. Fans are joining the group by the second — when I began writing this post there were around 37,800 members, now there are close to 38,500. The group is even asking fans to make like Tebow:

"AUL Action encourages you to make a short video about your own personal experience to share here on the Support Tebow's Super Bowl Ad page. Just make your short video and upload it to this page. There's a chance your video could be featured on the AUL Action blog and website."

The fervor that this unseen ad has inspired is truly astonishing. Without even making it to the airwaves, it has already inspired so many to speak out on their respective viewpoints. Do you think CBS will pull the ad? What do you think the network should do?

Hack in the Box -- Mystery app plagues Facebook users

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, explained that users of the social networking site are reacting to a mystery application that may or may not be spying on them. Facebook users are passing around a message, warning each other about the application, called the 'Unnamed app', and unwittingly creating an opportunity for hackers. "Users are told in the warning that they can find the 'Unnamed app' by going to 'Settings'/'Application Settings' and then choosing 'Add to Profile' from the drop-down box," said Cluley in a blog post. "Sure enough, when I went to look on a Facebook account, I found an 'Unnamed app'."

Hack in the Box -- Google seeks DNS protocol extension

Google is amongst a group of DNS (Domain Name System) and content providers proposing an extension to the DNS protocol so that Internet requests are sent to servers in close proximity, thus boosting Internet performance. The proposal, submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force this week, was noted in the Google Code Blog. Some persons commenting on the proposal, however, feared it would infringe on privacy. DNS, Google said, translates Web names such as www.google.com to numeric IP addresses used to communicate on the Internet. DNS can be used to load-balance traffic and send users to a nearby server, such as a user in New York looking up Google and the request being resolved to an IP address for a server in New York City. Authoritative nameservers, which have authority over DNS zones, look at the source IP address of the incoming request, which is the IP address of the DNS resolver. Sometimes, however, DNS resolvers serve many users over a wider area, and a lookup may return the IP address of a server several countries away.

> [Google] Google Encouraging More Chromium Security Research

Hack in the Box -- Google Encouraging More Chromium Security Research

In designing Chromium, we've been working hard to make the browser as secure as possible. We've made strong improvements with the integrated sandboxing and our up-to-date user base. We're always looking to stay on top of the latest browser security features. We've also worked closely with the broader security community to get independent scrutiny and to quickly fix bugs that have been reported. Some of the most interesting security bugs we've fixed have been reported by researchers external to the Chromium project. For example, this same origin policy bypass from Isaac Dawson or this v8 engine bug found by the Mozilla Security Team. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of these people and others, Chromium security is stronger and our users are safer. Today, we are introducing an experimental new incentive for external researchers to participate. We will be rewarding select interesting and original vulnerabilities reported to us by the security research community. For existing contributors to Chromium security â?" who would likely continue to contribute regardless â?" this may be seen as a token of our appreciation. In addition, we are hoping that the introduction of this program will encourage new individuals to participate in Chromium security. The more people involved in scrutinizing Chromium's code and behavior, the more secure our millions of users will be.

> [Facebook] Baby Boomers and Seniors Are Flocking to Facebook [STATS]

Mashable -- Baby Boomers and Seniors Are Flocking to Facebook [STATS]

A new eMarketer report shows that the number of Baby Boomers embracing social media, especially Facebook, jumped drastically between 2008 and 2009.

In its Boomers and Social Media report, eMarketer takes a look at social media adoption among different generations. Results showed that while the percentage of Millennials maintaining a social networking site profile was fairly consistent from 2007 through 2009, the same cannot be said of Baby Boomers' social media usage.

According to Deloitte data, 2009 was the year that social media bloomed for Baby Boomers, with nearly 47% of them actively maintaining a profile on the social web, which is up 15% from 2008. Further driving home that 2009 was the year of the social BB is the fact that from 2007 to 2008 there was barely a measurable change — just 1% — in that demographic's adoption of social media.

Boomers also love Facebook far more than other social media sites, with 73% of the group claiming to maintain a Facebook profile, while only 13% have taken a liking to Twitter. We also find it somewhat shocking that only 13% identify themselves as active LinkedIn users. One would think that given their place in the professional world, Boomers would we more active on the professional site.

For another quirky finding, take a look at the percentage of "Matures" — individuals between the ages of 63 and 75 — who use Twitter regularly. Seventeen percent is actually quite high when you compare it with the percentages of the other demographic groups. Also of note is that nearly all the Senior social media users (90%) have picked up Facebook as a new hobby.

It should come as no surprise that the digitally connected youth are the most socially active, with data showing that 77% of Millennials and 61% of Generation Xers maintaining social media profiles. Social media profile maintenance may not be on the rise for these groups, but that's likely because they've been familiar with the web as a social platform for several years now.

You can take a look at tw o of the telling charts referenced in the report below:

> [Twitter] iPad Divides Twitter [STATS]

Mashable -- iPad Divides Twitter [STATS]

Love it or hate it, the iPad is the topic of conversation the web is buzzing about. Yesterday Trendrr revealed that there were 177,000 tweets alone in the first hour after the announcement. But what was the sentiment behind those tweets? Now we know.

Crimson Hexagon analyzed the content of more than half a million tweets following the iPad announcement. While the results aren't shocking, what it boils down to is that the Twittersphere is split straight down the middle. Forty-eight percent of tweeters reacted positively, while the remainder — 52% — had less than stellar things to say about the iPad. It's a virtual tug-of-war.

Of course, the results aren't as cut-and-dried as love it or leave it. Based on the breakdown below, the largest chunk of tweets were very enthusiastic about the iPad, with 29% of people firmly decided on buying it. You can chalk it up to Apple fanboy syndrome if you want, but even in light of all the negative counter tweets, it's hard to ignore that nearly one third of half a million tweets — 145,000 to be exact — indicate a decided intention to buy the iPad, with the $499 price point resonating with these future pur chasers.

Of the 52% of tweets that lacked enthusiasm for the iPad, the majority — 21% of all tweets — had a bad reaction to the name itself. Nineteen percent just weren't impressed (they probably align with this way of thinking), and 11% were critical of all the build-up and/or just sick of hearing about it. Those that were disappointed, per the Twitter sentiment analysis, primarily took issue with the iPad not supporting Flash or multitasking.

Take a look at the sentiment analysis breakdown for yourself below.

> [Twitter] Kutcher-Backed Twitter Campaign Helps Bring 90,000 Malaria Nets to Senegal

Mashable -- Kutcher-Backed Twitter Campaign Helps Bring 90,000 Malaria Nets to Senegal

When Ashton Kutcher and CNN were racing to be the first to get one million Twitter followers, Kutcher pledged 10,000 malaria nets for Malaria No More if he reached the big number first. He won, so now he's making good on that promise. 89,724 malaria nets will be distributed in total, thanks to word-of-mouth on Twitter.

Malaria No More's campaign went viral on Twitter on World Malaria Day 2009, and the current Twitter initiative will conclude just in time for World Malaria Day 2010. The most retweeted message last World Malaria Day was: "Every 30 seconds a child dies from Malaria. Nets save lives. Support World Malaria Day = www.MalariaNoMore.org." Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher helped make it happen.

The nets will be distributed in the Senagalese towns of Seraya and Vélingara; each person at risk for malaria will get a net to protect him or her from the mosquitoes that carry the disease.

Kutcher — who has now exceeded four million followers — said at the 2010 People's Choice awards, "The true reward of the race to a million followers on Twitter are the 90,000 people in Senegal who will sleep underneath bed nets because of the money we all raised through the race." Other Twitter celebrities who helped spread the word included Anderson Cooper, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Ryan Seacrest and Oprah.

We've been following the impact of social media and technol ogy on the relief effort in Haiti, but it's obviously not the first example of social media being used for good. When you see stuff like this happening, though, you can't help but feel excited to be part of a positive movement in history for a change.

> [Facebook] Get a Sneak Peek at Coca-Cola’s Super Bowl Ad While Doing Good on Facebook

Mashable -- Get a Sneak Peek at Coca-Cola's Super Bowl Ad While Doing Good on Facebook

It's that time of year again, when football fans anxiously await the climatic conclusion to the season, and when the rest of us start anticipating another big duel: the battle of the Super Bowl ads.

In an effort to stay true to its "open happiness" catch phrase, Coca-Cola has decided to do something unprecedented this year and release a sneak peak of one of its Super Bowl spots by way of Facebook.

The campaign attempts to engineer viral interest in the Coca-Cola ads with a social good component to pull at the heartstrings.

Starting today you can visit the Coca-Cola Facebook Fan Page and use the Live Positively app to send a custom virtual gift (free)  – a Coca-Cola bottle image — to your friends on Facebook. The best part is that for every gift sent, Coca-Cola will donate $1 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, up to $250,000 max. Plus, Coca-Cola will reward gift givers with a 20-second sneak peak at its Super Bowl ad, which just so happens to feature characters from The Simpsons.

All-in-all, it's a win-win situation for everyone, especially the Boys & Girls Club and those of us that can't wait until next Sunday to get a glimpse at Super Bowl ads. We also think the Facebook virtual gift tie-in is especially interesting given how fanatical Facebookers have become over free and branded digital gifts.

> [Google] Google Proposes DNS Extension

Slashdot -- Google Proposes DNS Extension

ElusiveJoe writes "Google along with a group of DNS and content providers hope to alter the DNS protocol. Currently, a DNS request can be sent to a recursive DNS server, which would send out requests to other DNS servers from its own IP address, thus acting somewhat similar to a proxy server. The proposed modification would allow authoritative nameservers to expose your IP address (instead of an address of your ISP's DNS server, for example) in order to "load balance traffic and send users to a nearby server." Or it would allow any interested party to look at your DNS requests. Or it would send a user from Iran or Libya to a "domain name doesn't exist" server."

> [Twitter] Has the Twitter UK peak been reached?

TechRadar -- Has the Twitter UK peak been reached?

New statistics show that Twitter users in the UK have declined over the past few months, prompting analysts to question whether the site has hit its peak.

Nielson's figures show that 4,427,000 UK people logged onto Twitter in September of last year, with the figure declining by 24 per cent in October to 3,364,000.

This dropped further (although percentage wise not as much) to 3,414,000 in December ? a trend which is seeping into January's figures.

Twitter off-shoots popular

It's not all doom and gloom however (if you can call a global audience of 50 million plus doom and gloom), as Alex Burmaster, of Nielson, notes that Twitter off-shoots are rising in popularity.

"Although less people are visiting the official Twitter site, some of the applications that feed into the Twitter community have been seeing s ignificant increases in popularity, notably services like Tweetmeme, Tweetphoto and Tumblr," explained Burmaster to the Daily Mail.

"For example, in December 2009, over 20 per cent of Americans who visited Twitpic, a service that lets you share photos on Twitter, didn't go on the Twitter site."

TechRadar -- Twitter unveils censorship fightback

Twitter is looking into ways to stop the site coming under the same censorship problems as Google and hopes to make itself completely non-sanitised.

According to Chief Executive Evan Williams, who was speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Twitter will take the stance of not trying to reason with the censor but carry on regardless.

"We are partially blocked in China and other places and we were in Iran as well," Evans said to journalists at the event.

"The most productive way to fight that is not by trying to engage China and other governments whose very being is against what we are about."

Technological ways

There was no news on just how Twitter would evade the censors, but as the Iran Elections showed freedom of speech via Twitter was paramount to the way the election was perceived in the western media.

Evans did note that there is "technological ways" to blind-side the censors. Maybe he can let Google know just what he means by this.

> [Twitter] Controversial Church’s Next Picketing Project : Twitter HQ

Mashable -- Controversial Church's Next Picketing Project: Twitter HQ

Reverend Fred Phelps's Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Twitter's San Francisco offices tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. PST. The Kansas-based church is picketing because it believes that "the people who run Twitter … don't use their position & voice to warn a generation of rebels of the consequences of their rebellion."

The church knows how to get attention. It has been hit with a tsunami of criticism for picketing military funerals and waving signs that say things like "God Hates Fags" while claiming that America deserves its military losses because of its sins. Westboro even runs a website at www.godhatesfags.com. Members will also be protesting several Jewish organizations — including the Anti-Defamation League — in the hours leading up to its visit to Twitter.

The church members will be tweeting about the Twitter HQ picketing rally as it happens. Don't be too quick to point out the irony on that. The Westboro schedule says: "Now that should get interesting, WBC member(s) Tweeting as they picket outside Twitter, Inc. Won't a black hole or something open in the space/time vortex?"

Remember: The church is neither protesting Twitter itself nor decrying it as a tool of human communication. Rather, it's picketing the HQ because the bigwigs at the company aren't using their places of power and influence to spread the word about the sins Westboro believes people commit and their expected consequences.

Presumably picketing Twitter will also get them some web and social media exposure. The old "all press is good press" idiom doesn't apply in this case, though; the exposure they're seeking will probably just draw more ire and lead to more marginalization.

> [Facebook] War Protesters Storm Facebook Before the State of the Union Address

Mashable -- War Protesters Storm Facebook Before the State of the Union Address

An organization called Rethink Afghanistan has executed a widespread war protest on the White House's Facebook page.

It began with a drive for 20,000 signatures at Rethink Afghanistan's website, but folks who added their signatures were also given instructions for participating in the Facebook protest.

Hundreds of people have posted the following message or something very close to it to the White House page:

"President Obama, I am one of more than 20,000 signers of this petition from Rethink Afghanistan: 'In your State of the Union address on January 27, 2010, I want you to provide a concrete exit strategy for our troops in Afghanistan that begins no later than July 2011 and which completes a withdrawal of combat troops no later than July 1, 2012.' Petition: http://bit.ly/7romlW"

The posts link back to the petition page outside Facebook, soliciting more signatures and thus training more people to participate in the protest. We're not sure how many people have posted on the White House's wall in the protest, but as the message says, more than 20,000 have signed the petition.

Rethink Afghanistan has set up a Ustream embed on its own Facebook page, where it will air the anti-war documentary Cost of War with an introduction by Robert Greenwald at 7:15 p.m. EST tonight. After the one-hour documentary, Greenwald will answer questions leading up to the president's State of the Union, which will also stream on the Facebook page.

Regardless of your political stance, this is an interesting (but not surprising) use of social media. Do you think social media protests could have an impact on policy?

Mashable -- Will Twitter Crumble Under the Apple Tablet's Weight?

We're still a couple of hours away from Steve Jobs taking the stage to unveil Apple's tablet, but Twitter appears to already be feeling the weight, with timeline delays hitting the service this morning.

As of 11:00am ET, timeline delays for many users have swelled to 4-5 minutes. That means the whole "real-time" aspect of using Twitter for breaking news is out of play at the moment, which is especially damaging on a day where so much breaking news is expected (Obama's State of the Union address also airs tonight).

Of course, such issues are far from undocumented in the brief history of Twitter. It was a little more than two years ago that a Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld brought down Twitter, then in its infancy. Oh, how times have not really changed that much.

> [Twitter] Twitter Trends go local

TechRadar -- Twitter Trends go local

Twitter's trending topics have been given a local flavour, so fans of the service can now see what particular subject is becoming popular in their home town.

Although the service was announced last week, it was a soft launch. Now Local Trends is available to all who use Twitter.

"As Twitter evolves, and more people share what's happening in their own world, we want to provide another way for people to discover topics that may be relevant to them," says Jenna Dawn, of Twitter, in a blog post.

"Last week we began to slowly roll out a new feature called Local Trends to expose what people are talking about on the state and city level, and today we've fully launched so everyone can use it."

Nuances in our world

Trending topics have been one way to keep up with the zeitgeist on the social-networking service.

Everything from the recent Haitian earthquake to the Obama election victory have been trending topics on Twitter ? with anyone contributing to the topics by simple adding a hashtag before the topic's title.

"Local Trends will allow you to learn more about the nuances in our world and discover even more relevant topics that might matter to you," continues the blog.

"We'll be improving this feature over time to provide more locations, languages, and data through our API."

As to whether the service is actually down in Acapulco, we have no idea. But instead of facts getting in the way of a terrible pun, let us know if you are Mexico-bound and experiencing any Local Trends difficulty by Following TechRadar on Twitter.

TechRadar -- China opens door for Android phone release

China has offered the possibility of Google allowing the launch of more Android-powered phones in its country.

Google has previously blocked the release of new phones running Android ? its own mobile operating system ? after the cyber attack it received in China.

But Zhu Hongren, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spokesman, said that the releases would not be altered or limited providing they comply with Chinese law.

Limited functionality

The phones ? which were set to launch on China Unicom and be manufactured by Samsung and Motorola ? may still be launched, but without the Google branding. Whether Motorola and Samsung want to release phones that don't ha ve the full set of intended features is unclear.

Google has still not made a firm decision on whether it wants to 'pull out' of China following the attacks on its site ? but it seems China may be willing to open talks when responding to the question on Android.

Nominally, this fixes a 911 bug: but it also prevents you from jailbreaking your phone and activating features and applications Rogers doesn't like (even if you paid full price for your phone). But Rogers is only doing something about it now -- namely, cutting data access of paying customers until they accept a mandatory firmware upgrade that not only fixes the 911 problem, but also contains 'extra' features that prevent users from ever gaining root access to their phones -- even non-subsidized ones. And some phones are also getting bricked by this 'official' update. The moral: we really need to open up the competition here up North." Canadian Android Carrier Forcing Firmware (via /.) Rogers is the only GSM carrier in Canada and so the only choice for Android users. Months ago, a customer called Rogers to report a firmware bug that was preventing users from making 911 calls under certain circumstances, and informed the carrier that Google had fixed the bug (recording of that call). Mashable -- Twitter Local Trends Now Live For All

Twitter began a rollout of a new Local Trends feature last week, and now the company reports Local Trends is live to all.

Once you set your location, Local Trends allows you to see what conversational trends are popular nearby. The cities list is still limited for now, but the selection area indicates Twitter is "working on it" to expand the number of supported localities.

Changing your location immediately updates the list of trending topics in the right-hand sidebar of your Twitter.com home display. The below screenshot shows Local Trends in action in the Los Angeles area.

We recently looked at exactly why Twitter wants to know where you are, and the full rollout of Local Trends is the next step in that location-based adventure. Have you enabled the new feature yet? Were you surprised by any Twitter trends happening in your local area?

> [Facebook] Loopt To Start Pushing Check-In Specials Hard Using A New App And Facebook

TechCrunch -- Loopt To Start Pushing Check-In Specials Hard Using A New App And Facebook

When Loopt released its iPhone app alongside the App Store launch in 2008, it seemed to have everything going for it. Founder Sam Altman was given time on stage at WWDC to show off the app. It was featured prominently in the App Store for a while. And it was really one of the first hot location-based services. But then it cooled off, partially because the app needed to be open to update your location. And since the iPhone didn't allow for third-party applications to run in the background, it was severely hamstrung. Meanwhile, a series of check-in based location apps that didn't need to be open all the time came along and stole the location buzz. More importantly, they brought to light new busine ss opportunities for local venues with the idea of location-based deals. Loopt's new goal is to make a strong push for that. As you can see in the deck we've obtained below, Loopt is working on yet another new product that is all about location-based deals. This deck is apparently making the rounds with a bunch of agencies and advertisers, as Loopt hopes to get them on board when they launch they app in a few months. The new app is called LooptCard. Clearly, from the deck it will run on the iPhone, but it should also work across all the major mobile platforms, we're told. And these advertisers are being told that Loopt already has several retailers and venues on board with deals for when they launch.

Hack in the Box -- Has Twitter peaked?

It was the upstart rock star of the Internet in early 2009, roaring out of relative obscurity to become one of the most exposed -- some would say overexposed -- services on the Web. But since the middle of last year, the number of Twitter users has flatlined. Compete, a Web analytics firm, says the microblogging site's number of visitors hasn't changed much since June and that its roughly 22 million visitors in December was about 770,000 fewer than its highest number, which was in August. Multiple other analysts paint the same picture, raising the question: Has Twitter peaked? "Maybe Twitter was a victim of its own success," said Andrew Lipsman, an analyst at comScore, another company that tracks traffic on Internet sites. "It grew so quickly that it isn't meeting its own expectations."

Hack in the Box -- Chrome Version 4.0 for Windows released

Google has announced version 4.0 of its browser Chrome. Available for Windows only, it fixes 13 bugs and improves synchronization of extensions. Replacing the beta last December, the final version of Chrome 4.0 fixes a total of 13 security vulnerabilities and provides better synchronization tools. Among the vulnerabilities, six were classified among the â??high threat systemâ?? and four of them had even been withdrawn from listing errors Chrome official, supposedly to prevent hackers from exploiting this information. This is explained Anthony Laforge, product manager for Chrome: â??Some bugs are kept secret until a majority of our users to be confronted.â??. Another improvement of this final version lies in the synchronization of bookmarks and extensions, a useful improvement to the views of the 1500 add-ons available for Chrome. According to Ian Fette, production manager at Google, this version also benefits from Web 2.0 services, from technology HTML5 and JavaScript, such as facilitating online storage and therefore, collaboration. â??We have also greatly improved the speed of the browser,â?? said Nick Baum, another product manager on the official blog of Chrome. â??The performance has increased by 42% since last version, and 400% since the first version of Chrome released last year.

TechCrunch -- Lessig Calls Google Book Settlement A ?Path To Insanity?

The last person you'd expect t speak out against the Google Book settlement with the Authors Guild which will make available the contents of millions of orphan books in digital form is Harvard law professor and free-culture advocate Lawrence Lessig. In a lengthy essay in The New Republic he calls the settlement a "path to insanity" that will be "culturally asphyxiating," but not for the reasons you might think. Lessig believes the problem lies not so much with the settlement itself or Google, as it does with copyright law. But after pouring over the complex language of the 165-page settlement, he believes more than ever before in the need to overhaul copyright law for the Internet era (a theme he's hit on before). Here is the gist of the problem as he explains it:

> [LinkedIn] LinkedIn Adds New Ways to Browse Connections

Mashable -- LinkedIn Adds New Ways to Browse Connections

LinkedIn will soon roll out a nifty new contact browsing interface that should make things a bit easier for workplace social butterflies who have a lot of people to keep track of.

The update adds a panel that you can use to browse contacts by their companies, industries or locations. You can also find folks based on various tags that you define (for example, "recruiters" or "classmates") and recent activity. The interface has a search field where you can narrow things down by entering names or other information that might appear in a contact's profile.

Browse down to a specific person and a mini profile will appear in the far right panel, where you'll find contact information, a photo, current position and number of connections. You can also add or remove tags for that contact while viewing the mini profile.

LinkedIn just recently launched major redesigns for both its website and its iPhone app. Combine those changes, this new panel, and the faceted search feature and you've got some powerful tools for finding what and who you need among your professional contacts.

We'd love to see these sorts of features in more sites, especially Facebook, which has some big flaws in both its search interface and results. This is one area where Facebook could learn a lot from LinkedIn.

Here's a pic of the new search panel interface.

TechCrunch -- FCC Probes Google, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, And Verizon On Early Termination Fees

The FCC has just sent letters inquiring about Early Termination fees to each of the major wireless carriers in the United States ? AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless ? and one outlier: Google. We've embedded all five letters below. The inquiry is the first action taken by the FCC's recently formed Consumer Task Force. The inquiry comes only a few weeks after the FCC questioned Verizon about its high $350 ETF for "advanced devices" (the FCC deemed Verizon's response to be "unsatisfying, and, in some cases, troubling". The text of the letters to each of the carriers is very similar. But the letter to Google includes some interesting passages explaining why the company is being questioned alongside the carriers:

Google?s introduction of the Nexus One handset presents consumers with new options for obtaining mobile wireless service, from a new entrant in the wireless phone market. The Commission welcomes new choices for consumers and new entry into the market because it recognizes that robust competition benefits consumers by accommodating the wide variety of consumers? communications needs.

> [Google] Google releases Voice for iPhone as web app

TechRadar -- Google releases Voice for iPhone as web app

Google has announced that it has released Google Voice for the iPhone as a web app that can be accessed through the phone's web browser.

This appears to be Google's way of getting the application on the iPhone without the approval of Apple.

Jobs' Lot has delayed the approval of Google Voice as a native app for the handset since July, when Google claimed Apple had rejected the app. Apple insisted that it was under review and has since not made a decision with Google claiming not to have received any updates.

Things escalated to the point where the US Federal Communications Commission asked for more information on the affair from both parties.

Since the summer, Google has been stomping around Apple's turf with the release of the Nexus One smartphone, which could be the reason Eric Schmidt left the Apple board earlier last year.

New and improved Google Voice

Although Google Voice is already available via mobile web browsers for a number of handsets, the company describes this brand new version, which it calls a "web app," as more interactive then previous iterations.

It has been designed for the iPhone 3.0 and higher, and will also work on the Palm webOS platform.

Google Voice will let users listen to voicemails from the browser and use the interactive onscreen keypad to make calls.

More importantly, users can forward calls from a single number to multiple phones and make cheap long-distance and international calls.

TechCrunch -- Android Apps Are Priced Higher in Europe Than In The U.S. (Report)

App store analytics company Distimo has released its December report on mobile apps, this time zooming in on the physical location of publishers in Google Android Market, and how the prices of their apps compares to those of developers in other countries. Distimo found that publishers in the Euro zone (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Spain) tend to price their applications higher than those in the United Kingdom, the U.S. and Japan. The average price of an Android app published by a developer in Europe is $4.42, which is 49% higher than publishers located in the United States ($2.96). For comparison, publishers in Japan price apps $2.28 on average, while the United Kingdom comes out at an average price of $3.31.

TechCrunch -- Google Voice Does An End Run Around Apple And Shows Up In The iPhone?s Browser (Screenshots)

Remember the dustup last summer over Apple's rejection of the Google Voice app for the iPhone? Everyone was pointing fingers and even the FCC got involved. Michael was so upset that he quit the iPhone rather than give up his Google Voice. Well, now he can come back because Google Voice is finally on the iPhone via its browser, and Apple can't really do anything about it.. Google Voice will become available today for both the iPhone and Palm Pre/Pixi via a new mobile Website at google.com/voice/m. The new Google Voice mobile site shows your inbox with transcribed calls, which you can play from the browser. You can also send SMS messages or dial from the browser. The application ends up making a local call through your cell phone to Google Voice, which then routes your call through its own lines. When someone gets the call, they see your Google Voice number instead of your AT&T number. And when you get a voicemail, a notification even pops up on your iPhone with the transcribed message (through SMS).

> [Android] HTC HD2 Android version finally coming?

TechRadar -- HTC HD2 Android version finally coming?

Those of you looking at the HTC HD2 and wishing it wasn't so Windows Mobile-esque will be pleased to hear that there may be an Android version coming.

The HTC Supersonic looks set to deliver a 4.3-inch OLED screen, with Android 2.1 (the same used in the Nexus One) used to power things along.

It's also got the HD2-matching 1GHz processor on board, as well as a kickstand (which we know you all love) so you can watch your favourite videos hands-free.

Stripped

For the US, the phone seems to be running the 4G WiMax connection - if this was true it might make the chances if a UK version less likely, although a stripped down version is always possible.

At the moment we only have grainy spy pics to work with, and they show a little more - a dual LED flash on the camera makes it likely there will be a 5MP effort on there as well.

We're waiting more information on the device - but we're hoping HTC will be more forthcoming at Mobile World Congress next month, when we're assuming it will be announcing a whole slew of cool new smartphones.

TechRadar -- Acer planning Chrome OS netbook in Q3

Acer's journey with Google into new territory looks like continuing with the announcement that it will be bringing a netbook running the Chrome OS in Q3 2010.

The announcement was made by Jim Wong, Senior Corporate Vice President and President of IT Product Business Group at Acer, who stated to Bloomberg that the company was looking to shift over one million Chrome-based netbooks in 2010.

The move would signal another step along the path to seeing Google begin to spread its OS from smartphones to netbooks, with the simplistic platform likely to gain widespread acceptance from a number of manufacturers.

Big belief

Such is the belief in the Chrome OS that Acer is stating that the platform will be used in seven per cent of all its netbook shipments in 2010, which would be impressive should the netbook come around September.

During the interview, Wong also confirmed the company will be creating an app store for the netbook to download easy to use widgets, and the portal will also carry apps that can be used on the company's burgeoning smartphone range.

> [Google] Google admits to Nexus One issues

TechRadar -- Google admits to Nexus One issues

Google has admitted that there are some coverage problems with the Nexus One handset in the US.

The problems relate to 3G coverage - something a few users have been complaining about, citing low signal in supposedly covered areas.

However, Google's findings are two-fold, and they seem to apportion a little bit of blame to both parties - it's apparently poor T-Mobile 3G coverage in the US, and a slight issue with the software on board the Nexus One.

To that end, Google is going to issue an upgrade and is already testing out a fix to issue, which means that when the Nexus One lands in the UK it should be fully up to speed.

Robust

Vodafone's 3G coverage is also likely to be more robust, meaning that the problems that plagued from Nexus One users in the US sho uldn't apply to UK dwellers.

Google said in an official reply: "Our engineers have uncovered specific cases for which a software fix should improve connectivity to 3G for some users.

"We are testing this fix now, initial results are positive, and if everything progresses as planned, we will provide an over-the-air software update to your phone in the next week or so. It may be, however, that users are experiencing problems as a result of being on the edge or outside of 3G coverage, which a product fix cannot address."

> [Google] Review: Google Nexus One

TechRadar -- Review: Google Nexus One

Google has created hype around its own phone to rival Apple with its iPhone - and it has better specs on nearly every feature with the Nexus One. But is it enough to sway public opinion?

In an attempt to show itself as a mobile manufacturer in its own right, Google has released the Nexus One, a handset built by HTC but branded solely as a Google phone.

Despite some well-publicised problems with customer support and keypad malfunctions - neither of which became an issue during our testing process - the Nexus One is actually a stellar smartphone, easily the match of its peers.

Google nexus one

Everyone likes to talk about the next 'iPhone killer' - in reality, Android OS phones are content with second place, beating competitors like Nokia, Palm, Windows Mobile and RIM's BlackBerry OS.

With Android, the hardware is also advancing, especially in terms of the touchscreen and the camera. For those wondering if they should just jump on the iPhone bandwagon, there are still a few annoying qualities about the Nexus One. It will not kill the iPhone, and here's why:

For starters, the Nexus One lacks some wizardry. For example, there's a split second pause when you turn the device to the side for landscape orientation, and you might even find yourself turning the phone a couple of times to get the accelerometer to kick in.

Google nexus one

The keypad - while fully functional when we tested it for several days - is a bit imprecise on occasion. In fact, the Nexus One acts like some of the poorer touchscreens on offer at times, where the display is mostly responsive under the finger but lags occasionally.

There are also a few minor gripes that add up to a less-than-amazing experience. One is that the phone can get a bit greasy after extended use and even slip through your fingers. You'll smudge up the screen quickly.

Google also needs to think seriously about some of the power saving decisions on the Nexus One. Of course, you can configure when the screen blanks and when the phone goes into a sleep state, but the default options are impractical: to resume the phone, you have to press the power switch.

Google nexus one

For those who are used to just touching the screen to resume, or pressing any other button, you might get frustrated quickly. Forcing you to use the power button is a design decision - it means you won't inadvertently make a phone call with the phone in your pocket. It's still a pain, however.

And then there is just the overall experience of using the Nexus One. In many ways, the Nexus One is a geek phone - there are a plethora of menu options for built-in apps and an exhaustive list of options under settings.

There are so many techie details to explore that new users might get confused by simple operations, such as how to archive an email. (You have to 'long press' and select Archive.)

Bottom line: even if Apple has no need to worry, the Nexus One is still the best Android phone available today.

Sure, it's e asy to argue that the Motorola Milestone is more rugged and comes with a full QWERTY keypad, and that the Hero uses a specialised interface that you can use to suit your preferences. Still, as a basic summary, the Nexus One is thin, fast, has a great camera, and worked well as a primary business and consumer phone.

The Nexus One (at 130g) weighs a full 39g less than the Motorola Milestone, but matches the screen size exactly at 3.7-inches - but that's probably mostly dropped by losing the keyboard.

Like the iPhone, the buttons on the outside of the device are sparse. There are two volume control buttons, a power button and a scrollwheel. There ar e no buttons on the right side of the phone or underneath. Topside, there is a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Google nexus one

The scrollwheel is functional enough, although you might find yourself using the touchscreen more often. You can push the scrollwheel to select options on screen. We prefer the slightly more rugged scrollwheel on older BlackBerry devices - many of them have a texture that makes the wheel easier to use.

On the back of the Nexus One, where you'll see the rather large Google logo, there's a 5MP camera and a flash. This minimalist design gives the Nexus One a fresh, slim, and appealing look and feel.

The phone feels just about right in the hand, and no wonder: it is remarkably close in size to the Apple iPhone 3GS. As we mentioned, the Nexus One is perhaps a b it too thin and slippery for prolonged use.

Google nexus one

On the surface of the phone, there are four buttons - and they are not only lit so you can see them in low light but use haptic feedback to register each press (they provide a slight buzz).

There's a back button, menu, home and search. For the most part, these touch sensitive zones are easy to find and use, but if you press near the bottom of the button, your press will not register.

Over time, you learn to hit the top of the button to make sure you don't have to press a few times to get it to work right. The haptics are helpful at times, if somewhat annoying on repeated use.

Google nexus one

The Nexus One is not cheap. In the US the phone costs $529 without a contract or $179 with T-Mobile service, and it will be coming to Vodafone in the UK in the next few weeks, likely with a price tag around £350 - £400, but only via Google's dedicated phone portal.

One of the greatest strengths of this phone is the Qualcomm QSD 8250 1GHz processor, which runs lightning fast for games, apps, media and just about any task.

There are times when the phone hangs or pauses, but that is somewhat expected with the new Android OS. Another perk: the wallpapers are animated - we especially liked the one with the intersecting Tron lines.

In the box

The Nexus One ships in a white box with a curiously familiar 'jewellery box' compartmental design, cocking more than a snook to another big-hitting phone on the market.

There's a USB cable, earbuds, charger, a slim manual and the 119-mm tall device. The shape and size is definitely similar to the iPhone, without the thick and rugged feel of the Milestone or the more diminutive feel of the HTC Magic or HTC Tattoo phones.

Android was designed from the beginning to operate well as a touchscreen operating system. Like the HTC Magic and many other Android-powered models, the Nexus One is a powerful touch device.

It's easy to swipe through photos in the Gallery app, long-press on emails and click to start apps. The 800x4 80 pixels screen is bright and clear at a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and mostly operates quickly - faster than the HTC Magic and Milestone.

The main issue here is that it is not always perfectly consistent. The touchscreen is usually smooth, but there were times when the phone did not register an input or there was a slight pause.

Also, the touchscreen does not respond to gestures - it's not multi-touch (in the US, although we're hoping it might be in the UK), so you can can't zoom in elegantly on the screen (although you can press to zoom in).

Google nexus one

< p>NAVIGATION: You can swipe through photos with ease. The interface for photos even moves when you shake and shift the phone around

Google nexus one

HOME SCREEN: The main screen for the Nexus One takes full advantage of the expansive, bright and clear 3.7-inch screen

Making calls on the Nexus One works the same as the HTC Magic and Motorola Milestone with a few slight differences.

Since there is no call button on the Nexus One, to dial a number you have to start the Phone app and use the keypad, click on a phone number and dial, or open a contact and place a call that way.

We're not big fans of a dedicated call button because phone conversations have become just one of the functions we do on smartphones - in addition to browsing the web, running apps, listening to music and taking photos.

Google nexus one

CALLING: Phone dialing on the Nexus One is easy, although selecting the audio source can be a bit confusing at times

This means it's a four-step process to make a phone call on the Nexus One: press the power button, slide to unlock, start the Phone app, and dial the number or select a contact.

This is a bit cumbersome, but advanced users will find a work-around - such as using a BlueAnt Bluetooth adaptor with voice-controlle d calling. In tests, the Nexus One worked well with both BlueAnt and Plantronics headsets.

Calls were not quite as clear as they were on the Motorola Milestone and HTC Hero, however.

Like every other Android phone, managing calls is extremely easy. There are obvious buttons for putting a call on speakerphone, muting and even adding another caller.

Google nexus one

The only minor complaint here is that the iPhone does a better job of making it easy to select the audio source (say, speaker or Bluetooth headset). This is where the geeky nature of Android phones comes into pla y - you usually find advanced functions in a sub-menu.

Being that this is a Google branded phone, the Nexus One has no restrictions about which apps come pre-installed, so the company had no problems including the Google Voice app, which is still conspicuously missing from the iPhone.

In truth, this app is not exactly indispensable. It shows you which voice mails you have available, and you can use Google Voice to make your phone calls. (This still uses your carrier minutes, it just means that you have access to Google Voice commands and use your Google Voice phone number.)

We'd prefer an app that worked a lot more like Skype and feature in-service calling between Google Voice users and at least had a rudimentary calling keypad.

Google nexus one

VOICE APP: Google includes the Voice app by default, but it is a bit clunky to use

Once again, Google has tied the Nexus One into the Gmail service rather efficiently - you are prompted to add your email address right when you turn on the phone (or add a Gmail account).

The Gmail client is very easy to use and refreshes quickly with new messages when they arrive. You can also configure the more generic email app for POP mail messages and benefit from the same ease-of-use features.

Like the Motorola Milestone, you can also add Facebook contacts to the Nexus One, which you will see either en masse in the contacts list or only when they are tied to a Gmail contact (based on a selection you make during contacts import).

The Nexus One is not quite as powerful as the Palm webOS range when it comes to messaging contacts, how ever - the Pixi, for example, supports Yahoo! contacts. For text messages, the Nexus One is also powerful enough but does not stray from the basic Android formula.

Google nexus one

There is one simple screen that shows text messages, and you can venture into the settings screen to configured advanced functions - such as how many messages are shown. The iPhone uses a more colourful interface for text messaging, however.

One clever way to use messaging: Google has added a microphone in the keypad that you can use to dictate text. It works for searches, web URLs and so on as well, but it is only about a s accurate as the Google Voice transcription, which is to say: not that accurate.

Google nexus one

MESSAGING: The Nexus One does not add any new twists to messaging, but sticks to the basic Android dogma

It might have something to do with how Google is more familiar with the Nexus One hardware, or just the fact that the phone is stripped of superfluous software (such as the HTC Sense interface), but the browser on this model runs exceptionally fast.

We tested several feature-rich sites, such as Facebook.com and the sites loaded very quickly (as long as Flash was not used, which is not supported on the Nexus One). In a side-by-side comparison between the Motorola Milestone, iPhone 3GS and the Nexus One, the Google.com home page came up just a fraction faster on the Nexus One. Granted, it is a sparse site, but also a good test of figuring out the domain and loading the minimal graphics as fast as possible.

Google nexus one

WEB SURFING: Google.com came up faster on this phone than any other model we've tested, including the iPhone 3GS

Google has made some dramatic improvements to the camera features in Android, and the Nexus One takes full advantage of them with its 5MP camera. For starters, shots just looked clean and clear, matching the results of an entry-level d igital cam.

The Motorola Milestone, being a heavier and more rugged device, might work better for photography as you can keep the device steady during a photo. The Nexus One is lighter and thinner, so it is a bit harder to get a firm grasp on the phone for a photo. Having said that, pictures were not fuzzy or distorted.

The Nexus One offers some interesting new camera features. Like the Nokia N95 and Nokia N97, you can set white balance either as automated or by the lighting conditions you are - such as sunlight or indoors.

There is a zoom, and the flash can be set for automatic. Oddly, the camera stopped working after using the phone for a few hours. We rebooted the phone and the camera app started working again just fine.

The camera app also lets you select a colour effect (part of the Android 2.0 upgrade), such as solarised or sepia, to add some flare to images, but it is more of a gimmicky feature you might use once or twice. Once you snap photos, you can upload them to services like Facebook or Picasa, or send by email. You can also upload videos to YouTube.

Google nexus one

PICTURE OPTIONS: Pictures on the 5-megapixel camera looked sharp and colourful, with plenty of options for white balance and zoom

Google nexus one

IN FOCUS: Close up shots on the Google Nexus One show clearly, although some detail is lost

Google nexus one

SOLARISE: This option in the camera is a nice touch, although you have to feel a little redundant for day-to-day photography

Google nexus one

NICE CONTRAST: The Google Nexus One handles contrast well, picking out the light and detail here against the bleak background

One problem the Android OS has is that it's still massively inferior to the iPhone and other devices when it comes to media.

There is no obvious program on the desktop that you can use to manage music and movies and then sync over to the device, nor purchase movies from the phone itself.

You can use the Amazon MP3 service to buy tracks, and the selection is pretty good - far beyond just the hit songs. Once you load media onto the device - by connecting the USB cable and dropping files into folders - the Nexus One handles most of the popular formats including AAC, MP3, WAV, H.264 and MPEG-4.

Google nexus one

Like most Android devices, the Ne xus One supports YouTube videos and you can shoot your own video clips in 720x480 resolution, at a minimum of 20fps - smooth enough for most personal shooting.

We tested a Google Nexus One with 4GB of storage (or enough for a movie and a large music collection) but you can add a microSD up to 32GB of space, although we'd bet most people would be satisfied with the in-box storage offered by Google and HTC.

Google nexus one

GALLERY: Videos are easy to find - here, we shot movies using the camera and they showed up in the Gallery app

The Nexus One has a fairly long-lasting battery and worked for an entire day of occasional use - similar to what you'd expect with an HTC Magic or Apple iPhone 3GS.

Of course, this depends greatly on how you are using the device; if you have Bluetooth and wireless enabled, and if you have set the brightness at full power, then the battery will obviously get eaten up far more quickly.

For the most part, the Nexus One lasts about the same time as most Android phones, which isn't great as Google still needs to up its game in this department. Of course, the battery is removable so you could carry a spare or two and have the phone last for a few days time - but we doubt many people will ever manage to be THAT organised.

Google nexus one

Being an Android phone, there are some great tie-ins to the cl oud - for scheduling using Google Calendar (which is configured for you automatically when you enter your Gmail account), and for managing contacts that you import from Facebook or Google.

The Nexus One provides wireless and Bluetooth connection options, and they work the same as other Android handsets without any new features or radical departures. We had no trouble testing several Bluetooth headsets, or connecting to a variety of wireless routers and hotspots.

Google nexus one

Google nexus one

The uphill battle for any Android device is not whether it can outclass Windows Mobile, or work more intuitively than a Nokia phone running Symbian, or even compete with the Palm Pre (which has its own set of challenges finding an audience).

And there isn't even a battle for the business market, which is practically owned by Bl ackBerry devices.

Instead, the comparison always comes back to the Apple iPhone - is the Nexus One the best smartphone on the market, and if it is not, how far back from the number one device does it fall?

We liked

Slim, stylish and full-featured, the Nexus One feels almost exactly like an iPhone in your hand. The 5-megapixel camera is a major upgrade from the early days of washed-out photos and choppy videos and elements like the responsive touchscreen and Facebook contact imports are a real boon.

We disliked

The Nexus One will get slippery after a day of use; it lacks the special coating that makes the iPhone less grime-covered.

There were also a few times we tilted the phone and it failed to go into landscape mode, and we pressed an icon or button and the touchscreen did not register our click.

Some reports - which we did not experience on our review device - suggest problems with the keypad and with getting customer support for the phone, which is inevitable when you have a new carrier model with the Google phone shop.

Verdict

We think Apple should not be too alarmed. The Nexus One is a great phone, easily one of the best Android models we've used. There are thousands of apps available, the touchscreen is smooth and fluid - but the reality is that the overall experience has a few low points.

There are times when the Nexus One reveals itself as less than perfect, especially when an app that has worked fine (like the one for the camera) suddenly won't start anymore.

There were also a few times when the tilt function didn't function correctly, or when a finger press failed to register. These are minor issues, really - but issues the iPhone does not have, and as such it's not going to be the iSlayer that we were almost starting to expect.

A TechCrunch reader informs us that Google Kuwait has replaced its usual logo with a doodle one, as the company often does for special occasions in specific countries or on Google.com. Google is currently putting the spotlight on Kuwait's National Day, as evidenced by the file name (kuwaitnatlday10-hp.gif) and where clicking the logo takes you (translation). The only problem: Kuwait's National Day isn't January 25, but February 25.

> [Twitter] Huge growth in mobile use of Twitter and Facebook

TechRadar -- Huge growth in mobile use of Twitter and Facebook

Opera's latest State of the Mobile Web report has shown a massive rise in the use of Facebook through mobile devices, but an even more explosive growth for microblogging service Twitter.

Opera's monthly report delves into the aggregated usage reports it receives from users of the popular Opera mini ? giving a snapshot of what people are surfing through their smartphones and other mobile devices.

January's report looks at social networking ? and although the service's popularity in Russia gives it a bit of a .ru skew, the growth of Twitter and Facebook are clear.

Facebook number one

If Opera's report is representative, Facebook is now the clear leader as the most used social network from mobile phones, partly due to a huge 619 per cent growth through 2009.

However, the real success story was Twitter ? which despite only entering the top ten list at number seven has apparently experienced a growth of nearly 3,000 per cent.

Although it was leapfrogged by Twitter, MySpace also grew ? picking up an 84 per cent increase, but Friendster use declined by 29 per cent pushing it out of the top three.

Hack in the Box -- Google patches 13 Chrome bugs, adds extensions to Windows

Google today added support for extensions and bookmark synchronization to the production version of Chrome for Windows. The new release also patched 13 security vulnerabilities in the browser, six of which Google ranked as "high" in its threat scoring system. Although a beta of Chrome in December 2009 included support for both extensions and bookmark sync, this is the first time that the features have appeared in the "stable" build channel, a term Google uses in place of "final." Google also touted the growth of its extension gallery, which now has more than 1,500 add-ons, a five-fold increase over the 300 available at its debut last month. Only Windows' stable edition supports extensions and sync; Linux users must use the beta channel build for the same features, while Mac owners have to drop all the way down into the least reliable version, dubbed the "developer" build by Google, to access extensions.

> [Twitter] Oprah’s Designer Nate Berkus Tackles Twitter Backgrounds

Mashable -- Oprah's Designer Nate Berkus Tackles Twitter Backgrounds

Interior designer and FOO (that's "friend of Oprah") Nate Berkus has recently jumped on the social media bandwagon. Best known as Oprah's go-to interior designer (and a host on Oprah's radio network), Berkus also has a line of products with HSN. Although hesitant at first, Berkus is now a full-fledged Twitter-holic. Not content with just beautifying homes, Berkus has created some Twitter backgrounds that users can download to personalize their own pages.

I had a chance to interview Nate via e-mail about his recent Twitter epiphany as well as his Twitter background collection.

Mashable: When did you start using Twitter? How do you like it?

Nate: I'm a recent convert. In fact, I resisted a bit. I just couldn't imagine anyone would care that I was ordering Pad Thai for dinner or got a steal of purchase on eBay. But, my team strong-armed me and said I just needed to give it a try. And, as much as I hate to admit it, they were right. I am obsessed. I'm more interested in what other people are doing all day long than anything else. It's fascinating. And, I think it's a total game changer. You have a job interview and you need the inside scoop. With a few clicks, you can find out about the person interviewing yo u loves baseball or jazz…it's total access.

Mashable: What made you want to design custom Twitter backgrounds? What ideas do you have for the future?

Nate: I had no idea about any of it. Within minutes of clicking around, I found myself commenting on people's backgrounds…photos of their kids, the dogs, things that were unique to them. I wanted to personalize my page. We started tossing out ideas and the thought came to us to use my sheet patterns from spring. They're graphic, colorful, on trend….it just felt like a great way to make my page truly my own.

Mashable: Why is Facebook your distribution channel of choice? Any plans for any Facebook fan-page designs?

Nate: I'd have to say that I'm more on the Twitter bandwagon at the moment. Facebook is a bit more involved for me. So, I've got some help on that front. There's so much that you can put on Facebook and do. I'm more the brass tacks type…so I found myself jumping o n that train first. But, as I learn more about Facebook, I'm realizing the power. Yesterday, my entire family's on Facebook…all connected and direct messaging. It's crazy!!! And, it's not just family….I think you can find anyone on Facebook. Plus, you get direct access to people that you are inspired by. We haven't had that before. We'd see the people we love in their movies or on in an interview. But, to see Oprah tweeting that she just went to a movie. I don't know….it's just cool.

Mashable: What would you say to encourage other designers to join in beautifying Twitter?

Nate: For me, it's not about beautifying…it's more about personalizing. Twitter is a place where you share your thoughts, yourself….you don't want a plain white backdrop for that. You want the entire page to say something about who you are. Designer or not, if the urge strikes you, go for it. Put up that watercolor you've never shown anyone. Take a photo of that hat you just knitted….whatever it is, share it. That's what Twitter and Facebook are all about.

Design and Social Media Cross Promotion

Nate's first batch of backgrounds is based off a pattern from his upcoming line of sheets. That's pretty savvy; promote an upcoming product line by integrating elements of it into social media. You can download Nate's Twitter backgrounds from his Facebook page. Keep checking back for new designs.

Personally, I hope this idea takes off. We already have designers creating themes for web browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome. It's time for Twitter to get some love too.

What do you think of the way social media is intersecting with things like interior design, that aren't inherently web-based? Let us know!

Hack in the Box -- Twitter disables Flash feature after security researcher revelations

Social networking service Twitter has temporarily disabled a Flash widget on its site after a Florida-based IT security researcher revealed the widget was subject to a widely known vulnerability in Adobe's Flash programming language. According to Mike Bailey, a senior analyst with Foreground Security, the problem has been known about since 2006, but whilst Adobe has issued alerts about the flaw, not all websites have acted on the issue. The Reuters newswire quotes Biz Stone, Twitter's co-founder, as saying that Twitter "had temporarily cut off access to a feature that lets users display Twitter updates on their websites by using Flash technology."

> [Twitter] Chirp! Twitter Reveals Its First Official Conference

Mashable -- Chirp! Twitter Reveals Its First Official Conference

Twitter has just announced Chirp, the first official Twitter developer conference. It will take place at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre in San Francisco, CA, on April 14 and 15.

The conference, which will be keynoted by Twitter's leadership, including co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams, will be a two-day shindig. The first day will go over subjects such as Oauth, geolocation and business strategies, while the second day will be a 24-hour hack-a-thon for building apps and sharing ideas.

There is actually a great deal of information on the quirky but rather elegant website, such as a teaser for the after party, details on the 24-hour Hack Day schedule and my personal favorite, a secret portal for creating your own Origami Chirp Bird. As a master of the ancient art of paper folding, I really appreciate this easter egg.

Demand will certainly outstrip seats at this conference. Only 800 seats will be available (the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre, while gorgeous, is not a large venue for a conference).

The first wave of 100 tickets are now out, but require a little programming on your side — you need to use the API to find the username of user id 6253282 in order to register on Eventbrite. It'll also put you back $469.

If you can't attend or don't manage to snatch up one of the 800 tickets, don't fret too much — we will be there to cover the entire thing.

Mashable -- Post Pics to Twitter, Facebook and MySpace All at Once With yfrog

The yfrog Twitter image-sharing service can now simultaneously post to MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. You don't have to go to each website to share that vacation pic you took; just select your image, check the boxes for the services you want to send to and click "Post It!"

yfrog ranked eighth in our Twitter image service user poll two months ago, but it's been putting up new features slowly over the past couple months, including the ability to post videos and images directly from your webcam. It also powers massively popular URL shortener bit.ly's image-sharing functionality.

This is a welcome feature, but yfrog isn't the first to offer something like this. For example, you can do pretty much the same thing with Posterous when it comes to uploading pics to Facebook, Twitter and Flickr. Posterous doesn't advertise autopost support for MySpace, though, so we suppose you'll make your decision about which service to use based in part on where your friends are.

TechCrunch -- Platform Wars: Twitter?s Chirp Conference Will Take Place A Week Before Facebook?s f8

Back in December at Le Web, Twitter Director of Platform Ryan Sarver announced that Twitter would be holding the first conference of their own in 2010. Today, they've unveiled the details. Called Chirp, the conference will take place April 14 and 15 in San Francisco. Notably, this is exactly one week before Facebook's big developer conference, f8, which will be April 21 and 22. Day 1 of the Twitter conference will take place at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater. This day will contain the meat of the schedule. Highlighted talking points include OAuth, streaming, geolocation, business strategies, mobile integration, and the product roadmap. Right now, the only highlighted speakers include Twitter co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone as well as COO Dick Costolo and Sarver, but you can expect more to be added. Day 2 will see the event move to the Herbst Pavilion in Fort Mason for a 24-hour "Hack Day" for Twitter third-party developers. Naturally, there will also be a big party after the conference with "free beer, food and music all night long." No word on any performers yet, but you can be sure that much like f8, Twitter will bring in some big names to make their community happy.

> [Ericsson] Exclusive: Orange hints at offering Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 soon

TechRadar -- Exclusive: Orange hints at offering Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 soon

Orange has hinted to TechRadar that it might be releasing the forthcoming Sony Ericsson X10 Android device.

It's widely believed that Orange has picked up an exclusive on the new phone, although this might just be in a certain colour, much in the same way as the HTC Hero in graphite, as we've also heard another UK network is in negotiations to stock the phone too.

We asked whether Orange has any plans to sell the Xperia X10 in the UK, and this is the response given to us by a spokesperson:

"Although no official launch date or pricing details for this device have been made, as the number one destination for consumers wanting innovative multimedia devices, we continually look to range the latest high-end handsets on the market."

Rumoured release

It's rumoured that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will be launching on the Orange network in March, or possibly early April, which is the likely date of UK release date of the recently announced Sony Ericsson Vivaz, although we have no word on which operator will be picking up that device.

Orange has enjoyed something of renaissance in 2009, where it began selling such high end devices as the iPhone 3GS, the LG watchphone, t he Samsung i8910HD and the HTC Hero, and it makes sense that the network would be looking to pick up the new Xperia X10, with its innovative Android overlay.

Slashdot -- Mozilla Tries New "Lorentz" Dev Model

With the recent release of Firefox 3.6, Mozilla has also decided to try out a new development model dubbed "Lorentz." A blend of both Agile and more traditional "waterfall" development models, the new methodology aims to deliver new features much more quickly while still maintaining backwards compatibility, security, and overall quality. Only time will tell if this is effective, or just another management fad. "If the new approach sounds familiar, that's because Unix and Linux development has attempted similar kinds of release variations for iterating new features while maintaining backwards compatibility. HP-UX, for example, is currently on its HP-UX 11iv3 release, which receives updates several times a year that add incremental new functionality. The Linux 2.6.x kernel gets new releases approximately every three months, which include new features as well."

> [Google] 1,500 Google Chrome Extensions launch for PC

TechRadar -- 1,500 Google Chrome Extensions launch for PC

Google has announced a 'bundle of browser goodness' for PC users, with the out-of-beta launch of Google Chrome Extensions.

The beta version of this service has been around since December 2009, but now Extensions is available for stable browsers everywhere and there are 1,500 features ready and waiting for users to add to enhance their browsing experience.

Those au fait with Firefox will now how much help an extension can be, and some of the most useful for Chrome have, unsurprisingly, a Google slant.

These include: on-click access to Google Dictionary, Google Mail Checker and Chromed Bird, which allows you to interact with your Twitter account.

Bookmark Sync

Another new feature which has left beta includes Bookmark Sync. This allows those with multiple machines to sync up their Chrome browsers so that bookmarks are carried across all machines.

Google is also proudly announcing that it has improved its browser performance by 42 per cent since its last stable release.

If you are a Linux user then Google Extensions is still in beta and, unfortunately for Mac users, there's no sniff of Extensions or Bookmark Sync just yet. Google is hoping these will be with you "soon".

Mashable -- Bill Gates Explains Why He Joined Twitter, Publishes Annual Letter

It's been less than a week since Bill Gates joined Twitter, but the Microsoft founder has already accumulated more than 300,000 followers and used the platform to launch a new site – Gates Notes.

Today, Gates is using his new outlet to promote his second annual letter, which discusses the many philanthropic issues that he's involved in through the Gates Foundation. This chart provides an overview:

He also talked about Twitter and a range of other technology and world issues on Good Morning America. Asked why he joined the microblogging service, Gates said that he likes to get feedback on how his foundation – which includes much of his personal fortune plus that of Warren Buffett – is using its resources. In other words, he's tracking your replies.

Gates also weighed in on the current situation in China, where Google is threatening to pull out of the country if they do not relax their censorship requirements. The world's richest man seems to side with Microsoft's current CEO, Steve Ballmer, who called Google's decision "irrational." Gates' position is that if a company wants to do business in a certain country, they need to consider and obey that country's laws.

> [Google] Google founders to sell off shares

TechRadar -- Google founders to sell off shares

Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page seem likely to give up majority control of their company in a share sale.

The duo will shed around 11 per cent of their stake in the search firm, from 59 per cent to 48 per cent, relinquishing control through majority voting rights.

PC Pro is reporting that Page and Brin are looking to shed the shares over the next five years, with the deal netting them over £3 billion at current share prices.

While they will be giving up majority voting rights, the CEO Eric Schmidt will still hold 10 per cent power in the firm, so the management team will still be able to shape the direction of the search engine's fortunes.

Committed

"They are both as committed as ever to Google," a spokeswoman told the BBC. "They are integrally involved in our day-to-day management and product strategy. The majority of their net worth remains with Google."

Brin and Page created Google in 1998, and have grown it into a brand worth over £13.5 billion in that time.

However the firm has been branching out into a number of new arenas in recent years, such as the Android search platform, so fresh investment and direction could be necessary to keep Google functioning at the sharp end.

> [Facebook] Professor announces 'Facebook friends' fallacy

TechRadar -- Professor announces 'Facebook friends' fallacy

A researcher at Oxford University has deemed the amount of friends you have on Facebook is not actually that reflective to your friend group in real life.

Robin Dunbar, Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology, has noted that the brain can't actually handle much more then 150 friends, so having thousands of 'trophy' friends on their social network seems to be a pretty meaningless exercise.

150 isn't just a number plucked out of the ether but one which is all part of something called Dunbar's number ? an idea developed in the 1990s which is based on how much information the part of the brain used for conscious thought can actually contain.

Like the kudos

"The interesting thing is that you can have 1,500 friends but when you actually look at traffic on sites, you see people maintain the same inner cir cle of around 150 people that we observe in the real world," explained Dunbar about his findings.

"People obviously like the kudos of having hundreds of friends but the reality is that they're unlikely to be bigger than anyone else's."

> [Twitter] MusicDNA: piracy killer and Twitter user

TechRadar -- MusicDNA: piracy killer and Twitter user

From the makers of the MP3 file format comes a new audio codec which may well be key to help curb music piracy.

Called MusicDNA, the file format is being billed as successor of the MP3 ? by Bach, its makers ? and is packed to the brim with metadata, containing artist information, artwork and even things like song lyrics and Twitter feeds.

Much like the iTunes LP but not locked to iTunes like Apple's version, MusicDNA hopes to revitalise the music industry by adding extras to the files like live videos and even links to buy merchandise.

Double the price

"We bundle all the audio data and business intelligence in one file. The data can be automatically updated whenever you are online," said co-inventor Stefan Kohlmeyer at the launch of the format.

"You could even sell it for double the price of an ordinary MP3. If content creators make an effort to put a lot of exclusive content in to it, you could definitely charge a higher premium."

So far there are a number of music labels who have signed on to supply MusicDNA, including the UK-based Beggars Group, Delta records and Tommy Boy Entertainment.

Tom Silverman, the founder and CEO of Tommy Boy, is so enthused with the idea of MusicDNA he explained that: "If MP3s were the cassette, MusicDNA will be the CD."

It will be interesting to see if any sort of music format can knock any of the current digital stalwarts off of their perch (MP3, WMA, AAC and the like) especially if MusicDNA is going to be sold at a premium.

> [Google] Google censors swear words on Nexus One

TechRadar -- Google censors swear words on Nexus One

Google has confirmed it's censoring bad words on the Nexus One as part of the voice/text input feature.

The search engine made a big deal about the fact you can now speak your text and emails rather than tapping them out (which sounds to us suspiciously like phone calls) but it's also now confirmed that it will be hash-ing out them cuss-words.

We had a good go at swearing our b*llcks off when we played with the phone, but only the less offensive words managed to get through, with the S- and F-bombs being coded out.

Do no evil, say no evil

"We filter potentially offensive or inappropriate results because we want to avoid situations whereby we might misrecognise a spoken query and return profanity when, in fact, the user said something completely innocent," said G oogle, according to Reuters.

It's actually a pretty good reason from Google - it's a bit easier to accidentally say something that sounds like a profanity than to accidentally type it - but we'd at least like the brand to be a bit hip and let you turn it off.

Or at the very least - instead of using #### to hide the offending article, get creative like spell-checkers in the '90s, thus creating messages like 'fact this, it's a load of shot and crop yeah?'.

> [Facebook] Your Brain Can’t Handle Your Facebook Friends

Mashable -- Your Brain Can't Handle Your Facebook Friends

Ever heard of Dunbar's Number? According to British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, it's the cognitive limit to the number of people you can be friends with. The number is 150, meaning your brain can only handle that much friends, and – shockingly enough – it also applies to Facebook.

Even if you have thousands of friends, that number is really meaningless as far as true friendships go, Dunbar told Times Online. He supports this with traffic data. "The interesting thing is that you can have 1,500 friends but when you actually look at traffic on sites, you see people maintain the same inner circle of around 150 people that we observe in the real world," he said.

This is a well-known concept. The company that produces Gore-Tex fabrics, Gore (as famously explained in Malcolm Gladwell's book The Tipping Point), keeps its employees divided into small teams because in very large teams the relationship between people start to deteriorate.

The number is a bit different for boys and girls, Dunbar claims, without going into specifics. "There is a big sex difference though … girls are much better at maintaining relationships just by talking to each other. Boys need to do physical stuff together," he said.

Personally, I keep the number of my Facebook friends very small, around 100 – I friend only the people I know IRL – but I don't feel that having several hundred friends would be meaningless. After all, when you count in the relatives, business contacts and other acquaintances, I'm sure your social circle can grow well over 150. As far as real friendship goes, well, I'm not sure that Facebook is the best indicator, anyway.

> [Android] Who Needs iTunes? doubleTwist Partners With T-Mobile, Now Bundled On Some Android Phones

TechCrunch -- Who Needs iTunes? doubleTwist Partners With T-Mobile, Now Bundled On Some Android Phones

Big news for doubleTwist, the iTunes alternative that allows you to manage media for hundreds of devices, including Android phones, the Palm Pre, and BlackBerry. Tomorrow, the company will announce that it has forged a partnership with T-Mobile, which is now promoting it as the supported way to sync media to its line of Android phones. As part of the deal, T-Mobile will begin displaying doubleTwist banners in their retail stores and on T-Mobile.com. And perhaps most important, doubleTwist will come pre-installed on some Android devices, including the new Fender/Eric Clapton myTouch 3G handset. For those that haven't used it before, doubleTwist is a media management program that's both visually and functionally similar to iTunes in many respects, but with one big difference: it will work with nearly any device (iTunes only plays nice with iPods and iPhones). You can drag and drop songs to playlists, sync music, photos, and video to your devices, and share your media with friends using integrated Facebook and Flickr support. In effect, doubleTwist can serve as an "iTunes for Android". The software is impressive in its own right, but the company has also gotten quite a bit of attention because it was co-founded by DVD Jon, who serves as CTO.
