> [HTC Desire] HTC Desire finally available on O2

TechRadar -- HTC Desire finally available on O2

O2 has announced that it has put the HTC Smart and HTC Desire on sale for its customers - the last network to do so.

You can pick up both the phones on the network either online or in store, ranging from free to £99 depending on your contract.

O2 is the last network to release the HTC Desire onto its shelves, after it said it was putting the device through extensive testing, causing a delay from the initial announcement.

Last - and least?

However, Vodafone, Orange, 3, Virgin Media and T-Mobile have already beaten the bubbly network to the punch so far, so it will be interesting to see how many have waited for O2 to pick up the Desire.

The HTC Smart, which is exclusive to the network, is also on sale now, with a similar Sense UI interface but much cheaper contract, with all phones available free.

The Smart is coming in white too - if you're into colour variations and all that - so check out O2's site to see what's happening HTC-style.

> [Skype] Exclusive: Skype clarifies position on Windows Phone 7

TechRadar -- Exclusive: Skype clarifies position on Windows Phone 7

A Skype VP in the Asia Pacific region set tongues a-wagging earlier this week when he stated that the leading internet telephony company was NOT developing software for Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 mobile platform.

The news came as something of a shock to many, particularly those who rely on Skype as their primary VoIP and instant messaging tool on their mobiles.

Skype VP Dan Neary, the company's Vice President for the Asia Pacific region, clearly stated at an event this week that Skype "not developing software for the new Windows Mobile software due later this year."

Rigorously exploring opportunities

TechRadar was quick to seek some clarification from Skype, with a rep just send ing us the following statement:

"In February, we withdrew our Skype Lite and Skype for Windows Phones apps because they didn't offer the experience our customers had come to expect.

"We explore rigorously opportunities presented by new mobile platforms, and Windows Mobile 7 is no exception. However, we don't discuss future platform developments, and have no further information to offer at this time."

So there we go. A non-committal statement from Skype about its plans for Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft is clearly hoping that Skype's 'rigorous exploration' of opportunities to develop its software for Windows 7 will leads to an official confirmation that Skype IS planning to bring its software to Windows Phone 7 later this year.

As ever, we'll bring you more updates as and when we hear more.

In the meantime, you can see the last update on the Skype blog post explaining the changes back in February relating to Windows current mobile platforms a t blogs.skype.com/en/2010/02/changes_to_our_mobile_lineup.html.

> [Android] In Depth: Android 2.2: everything you need to know

TechRadar -- In Depth: Android 2.2: everything you need to know

The next version of Android ? codenamed Froyo ? is just around the corner. Google has been tight-lipped about what the new release will offer, but here's what we know so far.

This page will be constantly updated as new information comes to light.

Android 2.2 will be faster ? a lot faster

That's 450% faster than Android 2.1 on a Nexus One, according to Android Police, who benchmarked a Nexus One running Android 2.1 at 6.5-7 MFLOPS and their Froyo Nexus One at 37.6 MFLOPS.

Admittedly, this is only for non-native applications so it won't make the general day to day actions that much faster (although you will see a speed increase as the CPU isn't taxed as strongly in the background). Still, more speed = good, in our book.

Android 2.2 Froyo turns your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot

Froyo will let you broadcast your 3G signal to any device you like (including an iPad). The new update will also support tethering ? although in the UK the HTC Legend and Desire have had this feature for a while.

HTC has been throwing this feature around for a while, too, with its Windows Mobile range, like the HTC HD2 and the HTC HD Mini - so it will have the know-how already to (hopefully) integrate it with the Android range, too.

Android 2.2 will support Flash as standard

Google's next update to its Android platform will feature integrated Flash support ? that was confirmed by VP of Engineering at Google Andy Rubin. Android Police has taken a video of a Nexus One running Flash 10.1.

Android 2.2 will feature automatic background app updates

Android phone owners tired of having to manually update their apps will be pleased to learn that Froyo will let users set their phone to automatically upgrade applications in the background.

But don't worry about it hitting your privacy or acting as a Trojan horse for viruses - it's likely you'll have control over which apps will update and whether you want to do it automatically.

Android 2.2 will let you install apps to memory card

It's one of the entries in our wishlist for what we want to see in the next version of Android, and now it looks as though it's going to happen. An entry from an Android developer on the Google Code site states that this feature is "coming soon". Soon ? like the end of May?

What this means is more memory-hungry applications, like those on the iPhone, which means a better experience than the casual and functional offerings currently available.

Admittedly, we don't like the thought of having to pay for more applications on the Google app Market, but if it increases the quality of what's on offer, we're all for it.

Android 2.2 release date

While Google hasn't given an official release date for Android 2.2, that's likely to be announced at Google's I/O developer conference on May 19-20.

However, it could take a while to deploy to all phones - especially if HTC needs a little while to work Froyo into its Sense UI as well for the HTC Desire and Legend.

Which is frustrating to them, they say, because the goals of both projects are perfectly aligned, while OneSocialWeb is self-reportedly much further ahead of Diaspora in many ways. So what gives?

> [Pirate Bay] Hollywood set to pull the plug on The Pirate Bay

TechRadar -- Hollywood set to pull the plug on The Pirate Bay

Hollywood looks like it is close to scalping one of its biggest piracy threats in recent years ? The Pirate Bay.

The MPA, which consists of Disney, Paramount, Sony, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal and Warner, has managed to obtain a preliminary injunction against ISP CB3ROB, which hosts the data for The Pirate Bay.

If the injunction is successful, then Hollywood have essentially cut the Pirate Bay off from its source.

The Pirate Bay's host, CB3ROB, is based in a place called CyberBunker in Germany ? which is a Cold War era government command bunker ? and this is where the injunction has been sanctioned.

The writ means that CB3ROB is no longer allowed to connect The Pirate Bay's servers to the web.

Copyright fines

If CB3ROB d on't comply, it may well face hefty fines. This is because the MPA has managed to get the courts to say that it is liable for copyright infringement, for hosting links to torrents for the following movies: The Bounty Hunter, Alice in Wonderland, Our Family Wedding, Green Zone, Repo Men and Cop Out.

Torrent Freak, who initially reported on the MPA's plans, has contacted CB3ROB who explained: "We have no information about this. No letters have reached us or our attorneys."

All this in the same week that LimeWire is fined for hosting copyrighted content. It seems that web pirates are currently finding themselves all at sea.

TechRadar -- Android 2.2 Froyo turns your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot

Google's next edition of Android just got that much cooler as it seems Froyo will be packing some serious connectivity options.

Among the best is the fact Android 2.2/Froyo will let you turn your phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, broadcasting your 3G signal out to any device you like (including an iPad), according to TechCrunch.

This is a feature HTC has been using on its WinMo phones of late (namely the HTC HD2 and the HTC HD Mini) and is a pretty cool feature when you can't be bothered to tie your phone to your PC.

T stands for tethering

However the new update will support tethering too, so we'd imagine any operator offering Android phones will be clamping d own on their data tariffs sharpish (hang on...Vodafone?)

This latter part isn't as cool, as over in the UK the HTC Legend and Desire have had this feature for a while - but for the wider Android community it's better news.

And even better news for Android fans is that it seems the Android 2.2/Froyo release date is coming - Google has unveiled a frozen yoghurt statue on the front lawn of its US HQ.

TechCrunch -- How Facebook And Twitter Are Changing Business Models, Shaping Brand Identity [Video]

Now that many corporations have mastered the tricky art of signing up for a Twitter or Facebook account, the next step is leveraging social media tools in a meaningful way that impacts your brand and your bottom line. While some have found varying degrees of success, the vast majority could use a crash course stat. That deficiency has given rise to conferences like Smash Summit, held on Wednesday at the InterContinental Hotel in San Francisco, where representatives of Twitter, Facebook, Salesforce, Google and others offered social media tactics for businesses (Techcrunch was a media partner). During the conference, I caught up with executives from Virgin America, Comcast and Cisco to discuss their strategy and outlook. Major takeaways: social media has led to fundamental shifts in corporate structure/ brand identity, business objectives are more important than the platform, and Facebook can be a blessing (and a real pain).

TechRadar -- Skype will not be available on Windows Phone 7

Leading VoIP provider Skype is not planning on developing its internet telephony software for Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Phone 7 platform, according to the company's Vice President.

Skype VP Dan Neary, the company's Vice President for the Asia Pacific region, has said this week that it's "not developing software for the new Windows Mobile software due later this year."

No VoIP love for Win Phone 7?

The Skype man has not elucidated on why this decision has been made. But it is quite a blow for Microsoft, with Skype providing its VoIP app to most other smartphone platforms.

Instead, Neary stressed that Skype was developing new offerings for the iPhone, iPad and Android based phones.

If Skype doesn't appear on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 then it is a major competitive disadvantage.

However, this is not to say things might change in the future, as this is not an 'official' announcement that Skype is not going to support Microsoft's new mobile platform ? more that is doesn't have any current plans to do so.

> [Facebook] Facebook And Twitter Are On A Collision Course. And We’re In The Middle.

TechCrunch -- Facebook And Twitter Are On A Collision Course. And We?re In The Middle.

In Jim Sheridan's 2009 film Brothers, Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire play two siblings that are opposites. Maguire's Sam is an Army captain, a straight-laced hard worker, and a family man. Gyllenhaal's Tommy is a fresh-out-of-jail convict, a general screw-up, and someone who doesn't seem to care anyone but himself. But then everything changes (and I'm not giving anything away that isn't in the trailer). Sam goes off the deep-end and becomes the erratic one, while Tommy morphs into the hard-working family man. The only commonality the two share is Natalie Portman's Grace, Sam's wife who Tommy falls in love with. In the tech world, Facebook is Sam, Twitter is Tommy, and Grace is all of us, the Internet users. Facebook and Twitter both want us, and we're watching them morph before our eyes. Convoluted metaphor aside, what I'm trying to say is that Twitter and Facebook are becoming more like one another. I think this obvious fact is getting lost in the latest Facebook privacy debacle. Just imagine if Facebook had been more like Twitter from the start -- which is to say, open (with your data). We wouldn't be having this privacy debate right now. Sure, you could argue that Facebook would never have grown to a network of nearly 500 million users. But Twitter is already at 100 million (and counting) built on top of its public sharing model.

We've just learned from the good folks at Twitterrific that their iPad app will now include the ability to upload images and videos.

Multimedia support is just one feature that makes Twitterrific stand out among iPad Twitter apps — and one feature that will likely keep Twitterrific in many users' hearts in the event that Twitter releases an official iPad app, as well.

The app already includes features such as filters, retweets, link shortening, email and tweet translation. It also allows users to manage multiple accounts with an upgrade.

New capabilities with version 1.1 include support for picture and video uploading, support for custom upload services and image URLs from Img.ly and Tweetphoto that appear in popovers. Additionally, the app now uses OAuth and includes a default "reply all" feature.

What do you think of these new functions? If you're an iPad owner, what app or apps do you use to access Twitter, and what features do you rely on most?

> [Twitter] The 20 Most Popular Twitter Users, According to the “Accept” Bug

Mashable -- The 20 Most Popular Twitter Users, According to the "Accept" Bug

If the "accept" bug we encountered this week taught us anything about Twitter, it showed us who users are most desperate to have follow them back.

As a refresher, yesterday's bug allowed users to tweet, for example, "accept mashable." This would then make the account @mashable automatically follow the user who sent out that tweet. While many users saw that they were suddenly following a few new accounts, certain well-known Twitter users were bombarded with hundreds of new follows.

The new guard of Twitter celebrities as revealed by the bug is pop-culture heavy. Although Bill Gates and Barack Obama made the cut, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber scored much higher for follower-happy users. And celeb blogger Perez Hilton ranked as the fifth most popular Twitter account for the exploiters of the "accept" bug.

But the one queen who ruled them all was Oprah, who garnered the most attention in the form of forced-follows during the bug's short lifespan.

Here's breakdown of the top 20 Twitterati who were force-followed this week:

Another interesting point to note is how many folks ended up exploiting this bug before the folks at Twitter shut it down. Almost 6,000 tweets were sent that forced another person to follow the tweeting user. Many others discussed the bug after the loophole had closed, but those tweets comprised just 28% of "accept" bug-related tweets.

Many thanks to RowFeeder, a nifty tweet-tracking tool, for the data and graphic.

Today, Vanity Fair for the iPad appeared in Apple's App Store. This summer, the title — and many others — may be available directly in your Facebook newsfeed.

Synapse, a subscription marketing agency that works with major magazine publishers like Condé Nast, Hachette Filipacchi and Hearst, is working with with Alvenda, a company that specializes in Facebook shopping applications, to enable publishers to sell subscriptions directly on Facebook Pages and even in users' newsfeeds beginning in July or August.

AdAge reports that the tools will allow users to share articles with friends that can then be expanded into dynamic pop-ups on their newsfeeds, complete with ads and directions to subscribe to the magazine elsewhere on Facebook.

"Consumers don't want to leave where they are on the web, wherever they are," Alix Hart, VP for online marketing at Synapse, told AdAge. "Facebook is a place where we think that over the coming year there are going to be more and more opportunities to present magazine offers in a really relevant way to consumers, as they're starting to share magazine content in a much deeper way than ever before."

Notably, Facebook will not be taking a cut of the revenue generated by subscriptions via the app. What's unclear, however, is how much information Facebook will reveal to the publishers — an issue companies like Condé Nast have had with Apple, who will not reveal the names and addresses of those who purchase iPhone and iPad apps of magazines. It's also currently unknown how Facebook will be incorporated into the digital newsstand publishers announced last December.

Either way, this is a smart marketing move for magazines, and one I suspect will have much more success monetizing digital magazine content than simply developing versions for the iPad. I'm also interested to see how publishers of other types of media, like traditional books and news, will emulate this model.

TechCrunch -- TechCrunch Disrupt: The Facebook And iPad Panels

We're announcing two more exciting discussion panels at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York on May 24 - 26. Love them or hate them, two of the most interesting companies in the world right now are Apple and Facebook. In fact, the disruption caused by these two companies is an underlying theme of the entire event. First, Fortune Magazine senior editor David Kirkpatrick will join us to talk about his new book, The Facebook Effect (see excerpts here). He'll be interviewed by Founders Fund partner and former Facebook President Sean Parker. There will be lots to talk about with the recent (and developing) privacy uproar and social gaming revolts. Second, New York Times columnist David Carr will be on stage to talk about the disruptive potential of the iPad in media. Carr has been on the Charlie Rose show twice recently to discuss the iPad and is an unabashed fan of the device. Joining him will be Norm Pearlstine, the Chief Content Officer of Bloomberg, and Eric Hippeau, the CEO of Huffington Post.

> [Facebook] Facebook Wants Betty White to Host EVERYTHING

Mashable -- Facebook Wants Betty White to Host EVERYTHING

Not content with the glorious victory that was Betty White hosting Saturday Night Live, the denizens of Facebook have now turned their eyes to still more lofty goals: the Emmys and the Oscars.

As of right now, "Getting Betty White to Host the Academy Awards" is the most popular page, with 53,023 members at the time of posting. Then there's "Betty White to Host the Oscars," with 12,600 members. Both pages appear to be fan labors of love, much like "Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!", and they're already garnering copious amounts of media attention.

And then there's "Betty White Must Host 2010 Emmys!", which was launched by blogger Abe Gurko and has a little more than 2,000 fans. Gurko told us his reasoning for nominating the Golden Girls star: "I think that the Emmy awards shows over the years have been horrible. Bad writing, coupled with bad timing by the hosts. As these award shows have decreased in ratings, who better to put on hosting — or even co-hosting duties with Jimmy Fallon — than Betty. To give the show a much needed boost. Betty IS television."

Just a few days ago, the Los Angeles Times covered this trend, pronouncing in the headline: Hipster Culture is Having a Senior Moment. While I would assert that the affinity for elderly stars etc goes far beyond the "hipster" set, I would agree that older folk — and especially White — are, indeed, becoming what amounts to an Internet meme.

Fans are enjoying the power they have come to wield, even when striving for goals that initially seem rather lofty (like having an older, less culturally relevant star host a major awards show). See also: Can This Onion Ring Get More Fans Than Justin Bieber?

Sure, White does have legit fans who want to see her succeed (Gurko and Co. seem extremely sincere), and, yes, she kicked serious ass on SNL last weekend, but, in the end, getting behind Betty seems like it's becoming a bit of a trend.

It remains to be seen how effective campaigns like this will be as more and more continue to launch.

> [Facebook] Determine Your Facebook Page’s Value [APPS]

Mashable -- Determine Your Facebook Page's Value [APPS]

Social media management company Vitrue has released a free tool today, the Social Page Evaluator, designed to help marketers get a better understanding of a Facebook Page's value.

Just submit a Facebook Page URL and the app will come up with a valuation based on factors like number of fans, number of posts per day, number of interactions and so forth.

It's a cool — if not completely scientific — way to gauge the potential value of your Facebook Page to advertisers. The formula used by the Social Page Evaluator is related to the formula that Vitrue released last month to estimate the relative value of Facebook Fans to big brands.

The tool, which was built over 63 hours in a Startup Weekend-style project, is adjustable and interactive. For instance, the base rate of Earned Media Value (or CPM in more traditional terms) is $5, but this can be adjusted to a higher or lower value depending on the brand in question.

Likewise, there is a "Fan-tasize" section that lets you manipulate other features like number of posts per day, engagement level and Fan count to see how that affects the valuation.

You can also compare a Facebook Page with up to three other brands at a time and view a Page's value history. In addition to the valuation data, there is also a list of best practices for getting the most out of your Facebook Page.

So how accurate is this tool? It's difficult to determine, as it is based on a formula that, while derived from a study of large brands, is obviously not going to be applicable to all companies. Still, it's a fun, easy way to get an idea of the factors that impact a Facebook Page valuation. It's also a good stepping stone for marketers to start thinking about the potential advertising power of a Facebook Page.

What do you think of the tool? Let us know!

> [Ericsson] Samsung Wave and Sony Ericsson X10 mini appear on Vodafone

TechRadar -- Samsung Wave and Sony Ericsson X10 mini appear on Vodafone

Vodafone has announced three new smartphones to its line-up today, with the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini and the Samsung Wave joining the Galaxy S in the red ranks.

The Sony Ericsson X10 Mini, which is really tiny with dimensions of 83x50x16 mm, joins its bigger brother the Xperia X10 in the SE Android line up on Vodafone.

With a 2.5-inch screen, teeny frame and the TimeScape UI on top, it's likely to entice a few people into the Android camp, even if it is only running the creaking Donut version of the Google OS.

The X10 Mini will be followed shortly by a keyboard-wielding X10 Mini pro, which is precisely the same phone but with a QWERTY bolted on - although we're not certain this is also heading to Vodafone.

Wave - hello!

The Samsung Wave, the first phone to be running Samsung's new Bada platform, is also coming to the red network in the near future.

Using the TouchWiz interface, the new Wave features HD video recording, a 5MP camera and a Super AMOLED screen to offer a superbly crisp experience.

There's also Flash video enabled, as well as integrated Facebook and Twitter support.

We're waiting for more information on these two phones with regard to pricing - we can only hope they're not too expensive in the face of all the top end Android handsets on Vodafone.

> [Android] Vodafone to offer Samsung Galaxy S Android phone in UK

TechRadar -- Vodafone to offer Samsung Galaxy S Android phone in UK

Samsung's new Galaxy S Android phone is coming to the UK with Vodafone, meaning a whole host new tech to play with.

The new Android phone is packing in the best of Samsung's hardware, with a 1GHz processor, a Super AMOLED screen giving pin sharp performance and HD video recording too - a first for Android.

The Galaxy S will also be running Android 2.1, making it capable of enjoying the latest upgrades to Google's OS.

It's got a huge 4-inch screen, a 5MP camera and 16GB of internal memory with a microSD card slot.

Chrome - on a mobile?

Intriguingly, Vodafone is stating that this phone comes with Google Chrome integrated as well, making it 'quick to load, so you can do things faster online.'

The phone is still stuck under the 'Coming Soon' label on the Vodafone website, so we're still not sure how much this Android beast is going to cost.

But with all the tech on board, we'd bet that this one will outperform the recently released Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - it's going to be a battle royale (hopefully).

> [Facebook] Facebook Now Serving More Than 50 Billion Banner Ads Per Month

Mashable -- Facebook Now Serving More Than 50 Billion Banner Ads Per Month

During the first quarter of 2010, Facebook served up more banner ads than any other website, according to new data from comScore published in The Wall Street Journal.

In total, the social networking site displayed 176.3 billion ads during the period, for an average of better than 50 billion ads each month. That total represents 16.2% of the total number of banner ads served across the entire Web, and places the site ahead of the likes of Yahoo and Microsoft — the latter by nearly triple.

Of course, Facebook isn't quite monetizing on the level of those Internet giants just yet, with recent estimates placing the company's 2010 revenue at around $1 billion (Yahoo is expected to do nearly $5 billion in revenue this year).

Their monetization strategy expands beyond banner ads though, exemplified by the recent launch of a virtual currency – Facebook Credits – that sees the company takes a 30% cut from game developers with apps on the social network. Some see this eventually morphing into a PayPal competitor.

For now though, the company has established a larger footprint than anyone else when it comes to showing display ads, another impressive milestone as Facebook continues its march to becoming the most trafficked site in the world (it currently sits at number three).

> [Facebook] How To Use Facebook Ads For Social Recruiting

TechCrunch -- How To Use Facebook Ads For Social Recruiting

Social recruiting is all the rage right now when it comes to finding new employees to hire. Citysearch CEO Jay Herratti recently told me about a simple but effective way his company is using Facebook ads to hire people. Facebook ads are highly targetable. Citysearch puts up an ad with a picture of the hiring manager and shows those ads only to that manager's Facebook friends. For instance, the image of the ad at right is the one seen by friends of Citysearch senior VP Kara Nortman, who is introducing social features such as business Tweets into Citysearch. Since each ad can be "liked," and thus shared across the social network via the news feed, the ads become implicit referrals. If you know Kara and you see the ad, whether or not you are looking for a job, you might feel inclined to like it and share it with your friends. Or maybe you are looking for a job and since you know Kara or at least are connected to her on Facebook, you feel like you've got an in. The ads seem to be working. Kara's inbox was flooded after the ad ran.

This feature comes on the heels of a similar feature that let you drag and drop attachments into emails. The difference, however, is in the way images are displayed in the message; with this new feature, image is actually shown inline in the message (as opposed to being merely attached to it).

The feature currently works only in Google Chrome, but Google promises it will soon come to other browsers.

Google has updated its mobile maps application to version 4.2 to now include directions for your bike too.

Sadly only for the US, you can select the bike icon when getting directions to get an optimal bicycling route for Android phones packing 1.6 or above (still not the Hero, sadly).

For a more scenic ride, you'll also see the bike layer on the map which shows dedicated bike-only trails (dark green), roads with bike lanes (light green), or roads that are good for biking but lack a dedicated lane (dashed green).

There's also a dedicated icon for the Navigation function too, so if you want to use your phone as a free sat nav then you won't have to go through the palaver of powering up Google Maps just to point your car at the shops.

Share and share alike

The options there are pretty simple - you either enter your destination by speech or typing it in, and also navigate to any of your contacts with geo-location data enabled.

You can also share the location with your friends, which is obviously very helpful if you're all trying to drive to some place to meet up - when you've chosen where you're off too, simply click to send the location via email or SMS.

There's also the option to share a snapshot of where you are in the same way, or use Latitude to broadcast the results to all those in your network - the Google world is your oyster.

TechRadar -- Apple says iPhones still outsell Google Phones

Apple has questioned the veracity of a recent US mobile phone sales survey that claimed that Android mobiles were now outselling iPhones in the US.

Apple rarely comments on market research, but it has broken its customary silence to claim that the latest mobile phone sales data from market research outfit NPD is misleading.

Apple questions NPD

You may remember that NPD claimed earlier this month that Android phones were out-selling iPhones, 28 per cent to 21 per cent, in the first quarter of 2010.

The report came as a surprise to many market observers, who assumed that Apple's iPhone was still the market leader.

Apple has now said that the study involved data taken only from an online survey, an d was not representative of actual sales figures. The company also pointed out that a number of other market researchers continue to claim that the iPhone is outselling Android phones across the world.

Apple's reply was lacking in one important thing, however. Actual sales figures and concrete data. We won't really know exactly how many iPhones and Android phones have been sold through the first quarter of 2010 until all the relevant companies file their earnings reports for the financial year.

TechCrunch -- With A Small, Simple Feature, Gmail Continues Its Assault On Desktop Email

While I occasionally rag on Google Apps for downtime, the fact of the matter is that some of them are getting pretty amazing. The crown jewel is still, of course, Gmail. It's so good that I haven't regularly used a desktop email client in years. But despite that fact, there have still been a few things I've always missed, such as simple drag-and-drop to insert images into messages. Tonight, that changes. As Google has just announced on its Gmail blog, the ability to drag images into messages has been added to Gmail. There is no Labs feature to enable, it just works -- well, provided you're using Chrome. (You see the benefit of developing your own browser?) > [Facebook] Another Security Hole Found On Yelp, Facebook Data Once Again Put At Risk

TechCrunch -- Another Security Hole Found On Yelp, Facebook Data Once Again Put At Risk

Stop me if this sounds familiar. Last night, we reported on a security exploit discovered by web security consultant George Deglin that would allow a malicious site to quietly harvest a user's Facebook friend list, email address, and other data. The exploit used a technique called Cross Site Scripting (XSS) to inject malicious code into Yelp, and took advantage of the fact that Yelp is one of Facebook's partners for its controversial Instant Personalization feature to harvest the Facebook user data. The hole was quickly patched, and no user data was compromised. Tonight, Deglin discovered a second hole in Yelp that once again allowed him to inject malicious code using XSS that could put Facebook user data at risk. Yelp has now patched this second hole, and once again the company believes that no user data was compromised. Facebook has turned off Instant Personalization on Yelp for the time being as Yelp looks to ensure there are no more vulnerabilities.

> [Facebook] As Facebook Prepares To Launch “Places,” Foursquare Improves “Places” — Coincidence?

TechCrunch -- As Facebook Prepares To Launch ?Places,? Foursquare Improves ?Places? ? Coincidence?

As we reported over the weekend, Facebook is gearing up to launch a new "Places" tab on (at least) the mobile version of its site. This new area is likely to contain a list of venues close to your current location that you can check-in to. Yes, it's basically what you do on Foursquare (and several other location-based services). That's why Foursquare's announcement today that they've made their own "Places" area "smarter" shouldn't come as a big surprise. On its blog today, Foursquare notes that users should see improvements to the venues that show up in their own Places area on their mobile apps (and through their API). Basically, they're starting to look at venue popularity, time of day, and category to determine which venues to show a user. For example, if it's noon on a weekday, a restaurant may be a more likely destination than a movie theater. This should help with the problems some users face not being able to find the appropriate venue at first glance because there are simply too many venues around them.

> [Twitter] Could Twitter Data Replace Opinion Polls? [STUDY]

Mashable -- Could Twitter Data Replace Opinion Polls? [STUDY]

A new study from Carnegie Mellon University shows that analyzing data from Twitter yields the same results as conducting a public opinion poll.

We're willing to bet it probably costs less, takes less time and annoys fewer people, as well.

A CMU team from the computer science department looked at sentiments expressed in a billion Twitter messages between 2008 and 2009. The researchers then use simple text analysis methods to filter out updates about the economy and politics and determine if the overall sentiment of the update was positive or negative. The CMU team found that people's attitudes on consumer confidence and presidential job approval were similar to the results generated by well-reputed, telephone-conducted public opinion poll s, such as those conducted by Reuters, Gallup and pollster.com.

For at least some topics, CMU Assistant Professor Noah Smith thinks this kind of passive information gathering could work. "With seven million or more messages being tweeted each day, this data stream potentially allows us to take the temperature of the population very quickly," Smith said. "The results are noisy, as are the results of polls. Opinion pollsters have learned to compensate for these distortions, while we're still trying to identify and understand the noise in our data. Given that, I'm excited that we get any signal at all from social media that correlates with the polls."

The CMU researchers did notice that Twitter sentiments had much more day-to-day variation compared to data gathered from traditional polling data. To compensate, the team averaged the Twitter results over a number of days; at that point, the results were generally quite similar to polling data.

For ex ample, on Twitter as in life, consumer confidence slumped in 2008 and started to revive last spring. And Twitter updates showed the same general decrease in presidential job performance approval through 2009 as was seen in traditional polls. There were a few discrepancies — enough that the CMU folks don't recommend using Twitter to poll for election results just yet. Still, researchers hope that better natural language processing (NLP) techniques will make Twitter and other social media a valuable source of public opinion information in the future.

The paper is available online (use the left column to navigate to the "papers" section, and scroll down to "From Tweets to Polls: Linking Text Sentiment to Public Opinion Time Series"), for those who'd like to dig deeper.

What do you think: Could Twitter and other social media eventually replace public opinion polls? Would you rather have a researcher mining your public stream of updates for information or calling your phone to get the same information?

Mashable -- Mashable Launches the Bing Local Twitter Trends Map

Mashable and Bing are releasing a new feature today — the Local Twitter Trends Map.

The map displays the top ten Twitter trending topics in major US cities. Once clicked, each local trend displays a listing of the latest Tweets about that topic in the surrounding area. You can also find Mashable articles about the top topics in your locale.

Are New Yorkers tweeting about tech? Is social media the talk of the town in San Francisco? The Twitter Trends Map will help you find out!

I recently sat down with Bing Maps evangelist Chris Pendleton to talk about the launch, plus recent trends in location-based services and mobile social networking — you can view that video here.

Additionally, Mashable has entered a deal to use Bing to power the search on our site. You'll notice our search is now more customized as a result: You can search for the "Most Relevant" or "Most Recent" results, thumbnails are now displayed next to headlines, and share counts from Twitter and Facebook are included in the result pages. We hope you find these new search results more useful!

Disclosure: Bing is a Mashable sponsor.

> [Facebook] Facebook’s Social Plugins Now on 100,000+ Sites

Mashable -- Facebook's Social Plugins Now on 100,000+ Sites

Despite ongoing questions about privacy, Facebook's new social plugins continue to expand their footprint across the Web, with the company announcing on Tuesday that more than 100,000 websites have now deployed them.

The plugins – which allow websites to add Facebook-powered social features without requiring users to login – were announced less than a month ago at Facebook's developer conference, and attracted more than 50,000 publishers in the first week.

Some of those publishers are now seeing big traffic gains. Facebook says that The Washington Post has seen its Facebook referral traffic climb 290%, while IMDb has doubled the number of visitors it is seeing via Facebook as users "like" movies in droves.

Certainly, numbers like that are going to keep publishers experimenting with Facebook's new features as a way to drive more engagement and traffic to their sites. Of course, that could all change if the user backlash against instant personalization continues to grow. For now though, Facebook's path to web domination seems to be on track, and perhaps even progressing ahead of schedule.

Mashable -- Facebook Gets a Useful Unofficial iPad App

We need a native iPad app for Facebook but until Facebook HQ gets around to making one, the next best thing has just arrived via social media aggregator sobees.

sobees for Facebook [iTunes link] is an iPad app that lets you manage your Facebook experience in a native app designed to take advantage of the iPad's enlarged screen.

The app, which is free through the end of May, provides many of the features that Facebook fans have been looking for in an iPad app. This includes the ability to:

View status updates, links, pictures, wall posts and videos from friends.

Look at all of your friends' pictures on one page (like a real "face book").

View your friends' profiles and walls.

Manage events and birthdays with an optimized calendar.

Update your own status and post comments or likes to the statuses of others.

View recent photo albums from your friends and family members.

Check out this video which shows off the app in action:

Given the dearth of good Facebook options for the iPad, we're glad that an app like sobees for Facebook is available. It's a good example of how third-party tools can still offer a valuable — and sometimes superior — experiences in their own right.

What are you using to access and manage Facebook on the iPad? Let us know!

Also mooted was the ability to give applications such as Gmail and Twitter their own permanent tabs for easy access, and the introduction of a 'switch to tab' button, allowing power users running hundreds of tabs to quickly find the one they want. > [Facebook] EA announces new FIFA for Facebook

TechRadar -- EA announces new FIFA for Facebook

EA has revealed that it is set to release a new FIFA game, FIFA Superstars on social networking site, Facebook.

The game is to be developed by Playfish and will feature multiplayer gameplay through Facebook.

EA Sports president Peter Moore explains the idea on his blog, noting that:

"Leveraging our football gaming knowledge and marrying it with the social gaming expertise of our partners at Playfish is sure to provide more great opportunities to bring hundreds of millions of new fans to compete against their friends to win the FIFA World Cup through an engaging interactive football experience."

Moore promises "more to come on FIFA Superstars soon".

Zynga changes the game

In the meantime, it looks like Zynga's hugely popular FarmVille could be pointing the way to a new economic model for games publish ers.

FarmVille has attracted 78 million active monthly users on Facebook to date. Additionally, Zynga recently announced the private placement of preferred shares which suggest a market valuation of $4 billion.

Most recently, there are rumours that Zynga may well part company with Facebook and create its very own social-networking service.

The Wall Street Journal recently noted that a social videogame like FarmVille may cost in the region of $500,000 to $1 million to develop, compared with spends from mega-publishers such as Activision of more than $20 million to develop traditional $50 or $60 console games.

No wonder that Zynga's business model is becoming increasingly compelling for the likes of EA Sports and other 'traditional' videogames publishers.

TechRadar -- Twitter gets ready for business time

Twitter has finally revealed its business-based plans to a lucky few companies who use the micro-blogging service.

Mashable has had it confirmed that Twitter has begun rolling out the service to a number of companies but this is said to be expanding.

There are a number of things a business account will allow companies to do, including the customising of the profile page, the addition of a Verified Account badge (which was previously only given to individuals) and a whole bunch of extra features that have been tailored to help businesses reach as many customers as possible.

Just the business?

One of the extra preferences is that you can receive direct messages from anybody, which essentially means businesses can make their Twitter account an easier place to get dire ct contact and maybe improve their customer service ? something that all of us would appreciate.

All of this new functionality is bound to come at a price, but this hasn't been verified yet.

This Business Centre is just one way Twitter is looking at to make money. Recently it also announced the arrival of sponsored tweets to the service.

Twitter was hacked by a Turkish hacker this week, leaving many users with no followers on the micro-blogging service.

Twitter allows users to update their followers with messages of 140 characters or less.

The latest Twitter bug is understood to have been caused by a user called Bora K?rca, wiping out millions of users' accounts worldwide.

Celeb-Twitterers hit

Twitter has moved quickly to fix the bug, but not quick enough to stop it hitting the accounts of a number of high-profile Twitterers including Oprah Winfrey, pop star Justin Bieber and Tinseltown's favourite couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.

Gizmodo was first to break the news of the bug, reporting: "Follow this dead-simple guide to force any Twitter user ? from Oprah (Winfrey) to (Ashton) Kutcher ? to follow you. No, seriously."

It was a Turkish Twitter user that "fi gured out accidentally that if you tweet 'accept username,' for example billgates, then Bill Gates will follow you."

"For hours, thousands of people were able to take control of other people's Twitter accounts with a trick so easy that even the newest Twitterer could execute it," the report added.

Stephen Fry, the UK's leading 'celeb Twitterer' posted: "Do you know, I was sure I had more followers than that. Must've imagine it."

A Twitter spokesperson said about the problem: "We identified and resolved a bug that permitted a user to 'force' other users to follow them.

"We're now working to roll back all abuse of the bug that took place."

TechRadar -- Google hiring in new bid to take on Facebook

Google is on the hunt for a social media expert to head up its social strategy, a new job listing reveals this week.

Google has still to develop a social networking strategy that appeals to a mass market of casual users, following in the footsteps of recent successes such as Facebook and Twitter.

Google is late to social

GigaOm was first to obtain the Google letter which outlines the new role, stating: "This is a new and very strategic position, as Google knows it is late on this front and is appropriately humble about it.

"In Google's view, conceptually, there are two ways to tackle social, each impacting who may be successful in this senior post: 1) building an innovative offering specifically in this area; or 2) developing the cap ability and integrating social into Google's existing portfolio."

Google already has an array of social products from Orkut through to Google Buzz and the social search service Aardvark. Yet there is no clear social strategy, as yet.

> [Android] Android mobiles now outselling iPhones

TechRadar -- Android mobiles now outselling iPhones

A new market survey has shown that Google's Android OS has surged past Apple's iPhone army for the first time in the US.

Market research firm NPD has noted that while RIM is still taking a large share of the smartphone market (with 36%) Android-powered phones are now sitting pretty in second spot, with 28% share of the US.

Apple's line up, which includes just three models, is still showing strongly in third with 21%, and with the new iPhone HD popping out soon, will be hoping to increase that.

Windows Mobile phones have continued to drop in popularity, coming in at just a shade over 10 per cent of the market.

A whole new world

What is interesting to note that at the same period just 12 months ago, it was a very different story: RIM was miles out in front with 46%, Windows Mobile was having a great time on 22% and the iPhone just behind on 19%.

Google's Android was pootling about on 6% of the market, and in a year, it has nabbed 22%, and mostly from RIM and Apple sales.

However, it might be slightly better news for RIM and Microsoft, as the survey didn't include corporate or enterprise sales ? so while people might have a Googlephone in one hand, a fair few will have a BlackBerry (or maybe WinMo device) in their briefcase too.

> [Facebook] Yelp Security Hole Puts Facebook User Data At Risk, Underscores Problems With ‘Instant Personalization’

TechCrunch -- Yelp Security Hole Puts Facebook User Data At Risk, Underscores Problems With ?Instant Personalization?

As if Facebook's Instant Personalization needed another knock against it, tonight comes news of a security issue that makes the feature even more unnerving.  Web security consultant George Deglin discovered an exploit that would allow a malicious site to immediately harvest a Facebook user's name, email, and data shared with 'everyone' on Facebook, with no action required on the user's part. This specific exploit has been patched, and no user data was compromised, but the security problems behind it remain. The exploit took advantage of Cross Site Scripting to inject malicious code into Yelp. Normally such an attack wouldn't have particularly broad implications for Facebook users, but Yelp is, of course, one of the three sites that have been deemed fit for Facebook's highly controversial Instant Personalization feature.

TechRadar -- Google looks for new head of 'social' strategy

> [Firefox] Firefox 4 Plans: Faster, Friendlier, More Secure

Mashable -- Firefox 4 Plans: Faster, Friendlier, More Secure

Almost one year ago, we've gotten a glimpse of the next major iteration of Firefox, at least when it comes to its gorgeous new visuals.

Now, however, Mozilla's Mike Beltzner has shared a presentation that reveals quite detailed plans for Firefox 4. HTML5 and CSS support are mentioned, as well as faster operation, a greater focus on security and stability, new developer tools, and a lot of personalization options. Furthermore, from the screenshots embedded in the presentation, we can see that the visuals from one year ago haven't changed much, although most menu items (the home button, for example) are positioned differently.

The plans, embedded below, sound fantastic, but Mozilla warns once again that they could change before Firefox 4 is finalized.

> [Firefox] Firefox 4 beta could arrive in June

TechRadar -- Firefox 4 beta could arrive in June

A set of slides has been published that suggest the eagerly anticipated Firefox 4 from Mozilla could be making a beta arrival in June, with a final release in November.

With huge strides being taken by the likes of Apple's Safari, Google's Chrome and Opera, Mozilla is keen that the next version of Firefox can ensure that it builds on its strong second place to the waning Internet Explorer.

Firefox 4 will represent a major overhaul of the browser; a step change by Mozilla in response to rival browsers' improvements.

Fluid plans

The slides, which appeared on Mozilla's Mike Beltzner's blog, indicate some of the improvements, as well as an early timeline ? which could of course be subject to change.

"Please understand that these plans are fluid and are likely to change," blogs Beltzner - who is director of Firefox at Mozilla.

"As with past releases, we use dates to set targets for milestones, and then we work together to track to those targets.

"We always judge each milestone release against our basic criteria of quality, performance, and usability, and we only ship when it's ready."

Improvements

Mozilla indicates that Firefox 4 will be 'super-duper' fast, support the next generation HTML5, bring touchscreen and 64-bit support, offer a completely revamped user interface, hot swappable add ins, better stability and 'empower' users to take control of their data and web experience.

Of course, many of those improvements are to be expected from any major browser release. Speed remains a key factor as the browser is asked to do increasingly complex operations, and support for HTML5 represents the next great wave of internet standards.

But all eyes will be on the overhaul of the UI and the way in which Firefox empowers its users ? something that has been the bedrock of its success in the past.

> [Twitter] Twitterer fined £1,000 for airport bomb joke

TechRadar -- Twitterer fined £1,000 for airport bomb joke

Twitter user Paul Chambers has been found guilty of threatening to bomb Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport via the micro-blogging service - even though his tweet was meant to be a joke.

And while #twitterjoketrial continues to gain traction, the real question is this: is it okay to make a joke about blowing up an airport on a public communications network?

For Paul Chambers, the answer is clearly "no, it wasn't" because he has just obtained a criminal record and a £1,000 fine for doing so.

Crap! Bomb airport!

Chambers has been prosecuted under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 for sending an "indecent, obscene or menacing" message for Tweeting:

"Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You've got a week... otherwise I'm bl owing the airport sky high!"

So just be careful what you say on Twitter, is the lesson learned here.

Chambers now has a £1,000 fine and a criminal record, for threatening to bomb an airport on a publicly viewed communications system.

Was he an idiot for doing so? Or has he been unfairly scapegoated for a throwaway tweet?

This is one ruling which may have reverberations regarding what users can say on Twitter and get away with.

Mashable -- Facebook Faceoff: "Like" vs. "Become a Fan"

A month ago, Facebook began phasing out the Facebook Fan Page, changing the action of "becoming a fan" to "liking." The change was part of a broader plan to spread the Like button across the web and to lower the barrier for users to become connected with brands.

Not everyone "likes" Facebook's small but important wording change, though. Now that we've had a month to digest the changes that the social network has implemented with Facebook Pages, we wanted to ask you: which wording do you prefer?

Hack in the Box -- Facebook Hires Former FTC Chair

In the face of increased scrutiny of its privacy practices, Facebook has hired former U.S. Federal Trade Commission chairman Timothy Muris to defend the popular Web site's privacy practices in Washington, D.C. Muris, who created the Do Not Call registry as head of the FTC, is expected to guide the social networking site through the FTC's growing scrutiny of the community of more than 400 million users. Just last week, advocacy group the Electronic Privacy Information Center, in partnership with 14 other consumer and privacy organizations, urged the FTC to investigate recent changes to Facebook's policies. The government is scrutinizing Facebook policies that automatically share account holders' information with other sites and that make more users' information public by default, not opt-in. As the site's popularity grows, Facebook also is becoming a more attractive target for hackers and cybercriminals. On Sunday, friends of Facebook board member Jim Breyer received a phishing email purported to be from the venture capitalist, according to peHUB.

Yuri Milner, the CEO of Russian investment and holding company Digital Sky Technologies, will be on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt on May 24 - 26 in New York. Milner has spearheaded a new type of venture investment in Silicon Valley - invest in a hot startup at a high valuation (maybe higher that what others will pay), and then do a subsequent investment by purchasing employee common stock at a lower valuation. It's a perfect structure in a world where companies are delaying going public and it releases pressure from employees looking to sell some or all of their stock. People are calling these "DST deals," and I spoke to Milner earlier this year on camera about the strategy. His recent U.S. investments include Facebook, Zynga and Groupon. He plans to invest a billion dollars in social startups in the next few years, and he is one of the most fascinating technology investors in the world today. > [Skype] Skype to Introduce Ads?

Mashable -- Skype to Introduce Ads?

As Skype prepares to roll out five-way video calling this week — an addition the company plans to charge for at a later date — it's also thinking of monetizing the now free user-to-user web calling serving with advertisements.

In an interview with The Telegraph, CEO Josh Silverman explains that the company — once again its own entity — is challenged by its desire to keep Skype-to-Skype calls free and to maintain the quality of service. As a result, the Skype team is "seriously considering" including ads from third parties in order to continue to operate the service free of charge.

On that note, Silverman shares that, "It's challenging to get right as the way people use is Skype is very personal but we think our users expect us to do it so we can continue to support free. But it will be done in a tasteful way" [sic].

As it stands, Skype currently makes money from paid services that allow users to purchase credits to call landlines or mobiles, receive calls and manage a Skype voicemail account. Last week, Skype lowered calling plan rates and extended those rates to more countries.

Given that Skype has operated ad-free for so long, any introduction — regardless how tasteful — is bound to draw a strong reaction from users, especially those who have relied on the service to phone loved ones or opt for one-on-one video conferencing in lieu of face-to-face meetings.

How would you feel about ads in your Skype chats or calls?

> [Facebook] Facebook Board Member’s Account Hacked

Mashable -- Facebook Board Member's Account Hacked

Even Facebook board members are not immune to phishing attacks. On Saturday, Jim Breyer of Accel Partners became the latest victim when his account was used to send a spam message to more than 2,300 friends.

The message in question (see below) came in the form of an event invitation reading, "Would You Like a Facebook Phone Number?" and included an RSVP link.

The physical scam prompted individuals who clicked on the faulty link to enter their login credentials, which then caused their accounts to be hacked in the same manner.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the hack to PEHub. "This was a phishing scam and Jim's account appears to have been compromised … The issue has since been resolved and we're actively trying to block this activity."

Breyer's compromised Facebook account is another blemish on the company's muddied reputation concerning user privacy and safety. There's currently a swell of negative Facebook sentiment concerning the opt-in settings of Instant Personalization. In addition, Facebook recently had to disable chat following a privacy blunder that exposed users' live Facebook chat sessions.

Still the majority of Facebook's more than 400 million members — many of whom are not all that concerned with their privacy — won't restrict their status update behavior following the hack. But it's certainly an embarrassing moment for the company, and one that does highlight the fallibility of the world's most popular social network.

That is down from 1.4 million or so earlier this morning. This is true for every account. It appears to be temporary and part of Twitter's attempt to deal with the first bug mentioned above. Twitter has an embarrassing bug on its hands – one that allows users to make anyone follow them. Mashable reader Ozan Y?lmaz emailed us the details this morning, writing "[tweet] accept [username]" then the [username] immediately starts following you."

We confirmed the issue when we noticed that our main Twitter account is now following lots of new people that we didn't manually follow on our own. That means that if you choose to exploit this bug, your tweets can show up in anyone's timeline — at least until the issue gets resolved.

Other reports confirm that this exploit is currently being used by many users. No word yet from Twitter on when this might be fixed and if they'll be able to do undo the damage, but we'll update here when we know more.

Since last week's chat exploit, I've received further tips of Facebook 'security bugs'. Only each time they've turned out not to be bugs at all, but, well, features. With regard to the site's privacy controls, users are clearly confused. This confusion, I suspect, is leading to over sharing, which Facebook's critics say is intentional. More sharing equals greater monetization opportunities. As an example, a privacy quirk on Facebook appears to produce the following scenario: User A sends a friend-request to user B but they choose not to accept, at least not yet (it's a pending request, so they haven't declined either). However, just by issuing that request, some of user B's activity begins showing up in user A's Facebook News Feed under 'Most Recent'. That's probably OK, assuming user B knows what they are doing. But, more bizarrely, the feed could also show who user B has recently befriended.

> [Twitter] Tweet Trumps Turns Twitter into a Card Game [APPS]

Mashable -- Tweet Trumps Turns Twitter into a Card Game [APPS]

How do you prefer wasting time online during work: Playing solitaire or tweeting? Well, now you don't have to choose. From the dude who brought you Tweleted and Stupid Fight comes Tweet Trumps, a card game in which the only jokers and kings are your followers.

Tweet Trumps — which was created by Tom Scott and Dom Hodgson over the course of 24 hours at European developer conference Warblecamp — generates a deck of online trading cards culled from your mutual Twitter followers (people who follow you back). Basically, you're given a card with a collection of stats about a certain follower — number of tweets, grammar quality, number of followers, etc — and then you must guess in which category said person "trumps" another one of your followers.

Here, I was given a card featuring my friend Sammy Davis, who is an awesome vintage clothing seller. Since Sammy D. is rather loquacious, I guessed that she tweets more than my average follower. As you can see, I was correct; she beat out Mashable Features Editor Matt Silverman handily.

The game still has a few bugs — it was created in one day — and only works for unprotected accounts and people with more than 20 mutual followers, but it's still a pretty stellar way to kill your morning. Also, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than online poker. Amirite?

> [Twitter] HOW TO: Make the Most of Your Twitter Profile Page

Mashable -- HOW TO: Make the Most of Your Twitter Profile Page

This series is supported by Gillette. Learn more about Gillette and its products at Gillette.com.

Whether you're new to Twitter or are a veteran Tweeter, chances are you give more thought to the content of your Tweets than your profile page. But optimizing your Twitter page is fairly simple and there are a number of tools to help you get the job done.

We've showed you how to create a better profile picture and how to organize your Twitter account, and now we're going to show you how to make the most of your Twitter profile page.

Add your own favorite tips and tools in the comments.

Write a Great Bio

You get 160 characters to wow the world with your bio. Use them. And we mean use as many of 'em as possible. Don't overlook the importance of a bio. You know you rock, your mom knows you rock but the wider world might need a little more persuasion. Your bio shows up in the new(ish) box that people see when they hover over your name or image so it needs to sell a Twitter user enough to make them want to click through and hit that follow button.

Think of Twitter as a giant people-based search engine and think of key search words you'd like your profile to appear for, the first of which might be your full name. Other key words that could be relevant to you might include "mom," "developer," "entrepreneur," or "musician", write those down and use them as the basis for your bio. Finally, don't be afraid to add at least one personal element, preferably one that's funny — people do this to great comedic effect and it will make you less of a "tweople" and more of a real person to viewers.

One of the things Twitter gives you total control over on your profile page is the color of your text, but be mindful of the color your choose. You want to make sure it matches your background color and isn't so bright that it's not readable.

Choose a Rockstar Picture

A fair amount of research has gone into what makes a great social networking profile pic but it's still an area that generates great debate. The accepted wisdom is that a face shot, with eye contact and a smile is the best way to go.

Bear in mind that Twitter profile pictures are displayed in a square (so make sure your picture is cropped without chopping off any vital features) and only measure 48 pixels by 48 pixels (so make sure it also works small). Although the picture will be shown small in most instances, don't forget that if people do click through to your profile and click the picture, the full size will display.

Create a Funky Custom Background Offering More Info

Although longer than a Tweet, 160 characters is a very small space in which to convince the world of your awesomeness. If you're struggling to get your message across, or if you want to be contactable via other methods than Twitter (especially considering you have to be following someone to send a Direct Message) you can use your Twitter background to display more info about yourself.

Services like TwitBacks (along with others) specialize in helping create customized Twitter backgrounds with a left-hand panel where you can not only expand on your bio, but provide links to other social networking profiles.

If you don't want to add more info then, as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, consider changing Twitter's default background to something that is more you.

Make Use of the Web Link

Use the web link that Twitter offers. Aside from being about the only place on Twitter where you'll find full fat, unshortened URLs, it's a vital way to tell people more about yourself. Additionally, because Twitter shows full URLs here, it's probably the one place you don't want to use a URL shortener, especially if you have your own branded domain that someone might identify with.

If you don't have a personal website to link out to then why not link to another of your social networ king profiles, such as Facebook? Better still, use free, super-easy, templated blogging services like Posterous or Tumblr to create a one page "about me" microsite – it's as easy as picking a design and chucking up some words and there's no hosting or domain name hassle.

Pay Attention to Those Last Few Tweets

While a great Twitter profile can tell you a lot about a person, their actual Tweets are a vital indicator of the kind of content you can expect if you're to follow them. You should be aware of the last few Tweets you've sent out, as those show up first on your profile page and those are the ones people are likely to look at when deciding to follow your or not.

Use Lists to Broadcast Your Fascinating Interests to the World

Twitter is all about engagement and creating lists shows that you are interested in more than just broadcasting your own bon mots. In addition to showing how community-minded you are, lists are yet another area in which you can tell people something about yourself.

Are you really into music? Then list your favorite artists that Tweet. Do you work in marketing? Then create a rockstars-of-marketing Twitter list. Whether the areas you cover with your lists are personal or professional they will go some way to building up a picture of who you are and just what it is you're all about, which, let's face it, on one level is what Twitter is all about.

You can further explore and add your own lists on Listorious and Mashable's own Twitter List Directory.

> [Android] Android Now Outselling iPhone [REPORT]

Mashable -- Android Now Outselling iPhone [REPORT]

Smartphones carrying Google's Android operating system outsold the iPhone in the first quarter of 2010, according to new research out today from NPD.

During the quarter, Android handsets accounted for 28% of smartphone sales, beating out iPhone OS and its 21% share. BlackBerry was the bestselling OS, with its devices capturing 36% of the market. NPD attributes the shift to strong sales of the Motorola Droid and Droid Eris.

The news follows a report last month from AdMob that showed Android's share of the mobile OS market had actually grown past that of iPhone OS, at least in the U.S. Worldwide, iPhone OS still has a big lead, however, with 46% share compared to Android's 25%. AdMob's data is based on ad requests across mobile websites and applications.

With the new Droid Incredible reportedly selling quite well, this trend may continue in the near-term. However, the fourth-generation iPhone is expected to debut next month. Rumors that the iPhone will soon come to Verizon also continue to intensify, with that carrier's customers indicating they are ready to welcome the device with open arms. If all of that happens, the numbers could quickly swing back in Apple's favor. Stay tuned.

> [Twitter] Obama: Twitter is 'putting pressure on democracy'

TechRadar -- Obama: Twitter is 'putting pressure on democracy'

US President Barack Obama has warned of technology overload, blaming iPads, Xboxes and Twitter as things that distract rather than empower.

Speaking recently to students at Hampton University in Virginia, Obama cited games consoles and social networks as part of a 24/7 media environment which is becoming a burden for the youth of today.

In his speech he explained: "With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations ? none of which I know how to work ? information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation."

New pressures

He also noted that social media, including the likes of Twitter, meant that "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction.

"All of this is not only putting new pressures on you. It is putting new pressures on our count ry and on our democracy."

Obama was quick to note that going against the changing technological landscape wasn't the solution but educating people to live within it was: "We can't stop these changes. But we can adapt to them. And education is what can allow us to do so. It can fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time."

Obama may admit to being a luddite when it comes to games consoles and the iPad, but he is an avid BlackBerry user.

He did mention back in November, though, that he has never used Twitter but did stick up for the site saying he was "an advocate of technology and not restricting internet access," when speaking about China blocking social networks.

> [Google] In Depth: 10 things Google should change for Android 2.2

TechRadar -- In Depth: 10 things Google should change for Android 2.2

Android's greatest strength is also its biggest problem.

The constant, lightning-fast pace of development has left many users out in the cold when it comes to getting the latest OS updates - just ask anyone who owns an HTC Hero how they feel about being stuck with Android 1.5 in this day and age.

But the mobile OS marches on regardless, with the latest update, Android 2.2 - known as Frozen Yogurt or "FroYo" for short - rumoured to be due any day.

So what should Android 2.2 do? How can it improve on an OS that's already stormed the world during 2010?

These are our suggestions, should anyone from Google be reading and have a bit of spare time this afternoon.

1. An 'Update All' or 'Auto Update' option for apps

Yes, we understand Google needs to cover its arse in getting us all to click 'OK' on the privacy options when installing an app the first time, but must we go through this rigmarole again when installing simple version updates of our apps?

When you've got 30 apps on your phone and eight of them all coincidentally want updating at once one morning, the update process becomes a bit of a chore. Just let everything auto-update. We won't complain about privacy violations, promise.

Update android apps

2. Android Market syncing with PC

Isn't it just a bit bizarre that Google, King of the Internet, offers no way of letting users browse the Android Market from a PC?

Is that done on purpose, as a way to illustrate a future in which we're free from desktop computers? Or is it simply too big a job? Either way we don't care - we want it and Google has enough people and computers to make it happen.

Also, can the Android Market be a bit more user friendly while you're at it? Finding what you're looking for is tough, especially if you're looking for something generic-sounding, like a Twitter app. The ability to sort apps by user ranking would be a good start.

3. The death of fragmentation

The big speculation about FroYo is that it'll somehow magically end fragmentation of the Android OS. Would it be technically possible for Google to push out firmware updates via the Android Market in future? Probably not for older handsets - they're doomed! - but if every phone that launches from the FroYo era onwards could have its OS updated free from network delays and interference it'd be a great move.

Imagine a future in which everyone can install Android updates from the Market, or a Google web site, free from the chains of their local network operator, the day they come out. That's a future we would embrace.

4. Advanced power options

Battery life is terrible on all Android phones. Big screens, multitasking and data-syncing all eat lithium-ion constantly, so wouldn't it be great if FroYo let us select ultra-low-power modes for when we're not Tweeting or downloading? It'd also be a cool eco-friendly bullet-point on the Android 2.2 feature list.

We're sure Android is already as power efficient as possible, but we'd like to try getting our battery life up from six hours to maybe six and a half. Also, can the alarm clock work when the phone's turned off, please? It's crazy that decade-old Nokias can wake you up when they're switched off, yet Android phones can't. Put that in the hardware spec from now on, please.

5. More app payment options

It's odd that Android isn't particularly well integrated with the networks. Buying apps requires use of a credit card - why can't we have purchases added direct to our network bill?

Sure, it'd be a logistical nightmare, but Google has made a living out of sorting out logistical nightmares for the betterment of mankind, so we expect more. Some apps are starting to support PayPal outside of the Market loop, but there's a long way to go before Android offers a simple, seamless payment system.

Android payment options

6. Jazzier default music player

The default Android music player is a pretty bland, generic affair. It works, it's fine, but it's not the prettiest of things and could do with some developer attention and a 2010 makeover.

A better organised file browsing system along with the option to switch the phone to a music player mode, enabling people to scan through songs with the trackball or by pressing some other buttons, would be great - if only to help sell And roid to the mainstream crowd. And an official Google file-syncing service would be handy, too, for listening to our favourite MP3s while out and about.

7. Install apps to SD card

A bit of a boring one, but this is the number one request from the power users. Android apps are mostly rather small affairs and don't consume that much memory, but some of the fancier games do consume a large chunk of memory - and being able to hide these away on the SD card would be very useful. People just want the choice, that's all.

8. Advanced Notifications tab

We tend to use the Notifications area as a phone maintenance 'To Do List', putting off tiresome app updates until we're bored enough. So it'd be great if we would dismiss individual Notifications one at a time rather than only being able to clear the whole list, leaving only the few important-sounding Notifications we need to 'action' later. We do occasionally have other things to do than fuss over our phones, making sure everything's up-to date, you know, Google.

Android notifications

9. USB/Bluetooth keyboard support

A USB keyboard would presumably be a little tricky to implement what with its power needs, but the new Bluetooth HID (Human Interface Device) Profile would let Android easily connect to a Bluetooth keyboard. iPhone already supports this feature, so enabling it on Android 2.2 would carry on annoying Steve Jobs - which is the most important thing of all.

10. Offline Maps caching

The mobile networks seem to be taking a hardline approach to data transfer at the moment, rendering use of our always-on smartphones something of a minefield of excess fees and charges.

So if we could cache up all our map data via Wi-Fi before setting off into the world it'd be lovely. The networks would be happier - and we wouldn't have to worry about getting monstrous data bills at the end of the month for daring to use our phone's features. A 'Favourite Maps' option, something like that. That's all we're asking for.

> [Facebook] Rumour: FarmVille to leave Facebook?

TechRadar -- Rumour: FarmVille to leave Facebook?

Reports suggest that casual game developer Zynga may well have its own plans to leave Facebook in the near future and run its hugely popular games such as FarmVille and Mafia Wars on its own dedicated social network.

If Zynga was to launch its own social gaming network, as the report on TechCrunch suggests, then it would be a major blow to Mark Zuckerburg and his team at Facebook.

Facebook pushes Zynga

Latest reports claim that relations between Zynga and Facebook are at an all-time low, largely down to Facebook's "Facebook Credits" system, which is the only way that independent game makers can get paid via Facebook.

The credits system gives 30 per cent of revenue to Facebook, v ery much like Apple's own system with the App Store.

Facebook is apparently pushing Zynga into signing a new long-term exclusivity deal, which has pushed the issue to the fore.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus has now informed staff to prepare for a the possibility of a split from Facebook and, according to a leaked email, is planning to "launch a social game network called Zynga Live."

Facebook told TechCrunch "we have conversations with our large developers all the time and we don't typically comment on specific discussions."

Zynga has so far declined to comment.

TechRadar -- Skype to offer ads to keep free service

Skype is set to consider offering adverts to keep its VoIP service free, according to the company's CEO.

Josh Silverman, CEO of of Skype, is "seriously considering" launching third party advertising on the service, according to The Telegraph.

Silverman says Skype's mission statement is to be "the fabric of real-time communication on the web", and has announced that the company is looking for additional revenue streams.

Ad-supported Skype

Which, basically, means an ad-supported Skype. Which is no doubt going to annoy those users that have been making Skype calls for year unimpeded by advertising gimmicks.

"It's challenging to get right as the way people use is Skype is very personal but we think our users expect us to do it so we can continue to support free. But it will be done in a tasteful way," Silverman said.

Skype recently announced a range of new monthly subscription services as well as new services such as five-way video group calling, currently still in beta testing.

> [Facebook] HOW TO: Find Long Lost Friends on Facebook

Mashable -- HOW TO: Find Long Lost Friends on Facebook

Facebook is now an essential unifying force in many people's social lives — it helps friends arrange events, wish each other "happy birthday," solidify communities and social bonds, and share recent memories with images.

All of that has been always possible by other, less convenient means, but Facebook helps us do one thing that's unique to our time: Get daily updates on the lives of friends all over the world, in different walks of life.

In a way, that's what the service originally was. Its name and college origins conjure images of a yearbook, intended not to keep up on what's new but to act as a record of past relationships, associations and accomplishments. Facebook hasn't forgotten that, so it provides tools for reconnecting with friends from your past — past schools, past jobs and even past e-mail exchanges.

Here's a list of ways to find long lost friends on Facebook.

Find Friends You E-mail

Look in Facebook's right navigation panel and you'll see an area labeled "Get Connected." It's easy to miss, but this is where you'll start when looking for old friends. Click "Find your friends" underneath "Who's on Facebook?" and you'll be taken to the "Find people you know on Facebook" portal.

The first option you'll see is "Find people you e-mail." Just type in your e-mail address here, and if your e-mail service is a popular one (like Gmail or Yahoo), a window will pop up that will log into your account and import all your contacts.

You'll get a list of people you've e-mailed who have registered on Facebook using the e-mail address from your contact list. Check the ones you know and click "Add as Friends" once you've found all the folks you want.

Follow Facebook's Recommendations

Head back to that first page and look further down the options, below the e-mail one, and you'll see a collage of profile pictures and names under the header "Suggestions." These are people Facebook's computers think you might know based on factors like whether or not you have lots of mutual friends.

If you don't know someone on the list, click the "X" by that person's name to make him or her disappear, and he or she will be replaced by a new possibility. If you do know the next one one, just click "Add as friend" and you're set.

F ind Friends By Name or E-mail Address

In the bottom left of the "Find people you know on Facebook" page, you'll see a subsection labeled "search for people." There's a simple search field where you can type in a name or e-mail address. Facebook will look for any users with that name or e-mail address, then give you the option of adding whoever it finds as a friend.

Find Former or Current Classmates or Co-workers

When you don't know your former contact's e-mail address or if his or her name is so common that you can't find him or her in the search, you can search based on school or workplace. You can only do this for schools or workplaces you've attended. Click on any of the links below the name and e-mail search field (such as "Find former college classmates") to navigate to another friend-finding page.

You can type in the school name or the class year, then (optionally) a name to find a classmate. Alternatively, you can search by company and name to find co-workers and colleagues.

Find Friends You IM

Step back to the main portal and look in the bottom right corner to find the IM option. It works just like the e-mail one, except that you have to select a service. For example, click on AOL Instant Messenger and type in your screen name and password to import all your AIM contacts. If your AIM buddies have Facebook accounts that list their screen names, they'll appear in the results and you'll be able to add them.

Use Facebook Search

If none of the above options helped you find the person you're looking for, you can really get your hands dirty by using Facebook's more general search feature. The search field is always at the top of every Facebook page.

Type in a name, but don't hit enter or return yet because you might get taken straight to a specific profile or page. Instead, click "See More Results…" at the bottom of the drop-down list that appears.

In the left navigation menu (the one that says "All Results," "People," etc.), click "People." Now you can narrow your search by typing in location, school or workplace in addition to name.

> [Facebook] Spotted: Facebook’s Check-In Functionality And New “Places” Tab

TechCrunch -- Spotted: Facebook?s Check-In Functionality And New ?Places? Tab

Code doesn't lie. Over the past several weeks, there's been a lot of speculation about Facebook's location functionality. At least part of that speculation can end now. We now know what Facebook is planning to launch with regard to location shortly, because it's right there in their code. Specifically, it's right there in the JavaScript on the touch.facebook.com version of the site. This is the mobile version of Facebook that is optimized for phones with touchscreens like the iPhone and Android phones. Visiting this site on the Safari web browser (which, of course, the iPhone uses a version of) causes something interesting to happen: it just hangs. And when you enable debug mode, it's easy to see why.

> [Facebook] Facebook statuses reveal happiness

Hack in the Box -- Facebook statuses reveal happiness

Facebook has extended its "Gross National Happiness" prototype app to 18 new countries. The app analyzes words in status updates like "awesome" or "tragic" to track changes in the collective emotional state of its users. When Facebook applied the methods to its U.S. userbase last year, it found that happiness went way up on holidays and way down when celebrities like Michael Jackson or Heath Ledger passed away. While the results of the study weren't surprising, the idea of using status updates to measure national happiness was a novel one. After Facebook's latest update, the list now includes the U.S., Canada, India, Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Austria, Germany, New Zealand, Italy, Chile, Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, South Africa, Argentina, Australia, Ireland, Venezuela and Colombia. Status updates in the English, Dutch, German, Italian and Spanish languages are included in the data.

Hack in the Box -- Think twice before sharing something on Facebook

Facebook has become the conference room for the young generation. They are sharing their personal ideas identity and views over there with others. In addition to this they can send and receive mails and messages as well by this social networking site. And one thing must be noted that all these are virtual and in done the cyber space. We can make friends. We can share a chat with them as we do when we meet physically. But what if our own personal data will be stolen or misused by others. That is by hacking and phishing i. e. stealing others data or information without the owner's permission. The hackers are simple programmers who are the master of any software and website related issues. In case of facebook there should be a perfect privacy control and phishing filters. The existing protocols are not working and our vital information which is in Facebook is open for any misuse. There are thousands of incidents proving the vulnerability the website.

TechCrunch -- NSFW: Facebook Breached My Privacy, And Other Things That Whiny, Entitled Dipshits Say

Starting this week, I'm implementing a rule for readers of this column. The fact is, I express some pretty controversial views here on TechCrunch. Views on subjects like race and prostitution and terrorism and mental illness. Views that you - as a smart, educated TC reader - are perfectly able to process and discuss in a mature way, but views that could easily be misconstrued by the wider internet community, should they be reposted on other blogs, or quoted out of context. From this point forward, then, I'm banning you from reposting, quoting or even discussing my columns outside of TechCrunch. It's to protect my privacy more than anything else: I mean, sure, I've chosen to share those views online - in an inherently unsecure environment - but still I reserve the right to be shocked and outraged should they find their way from one semi-controllable online environment to another slightly less controllable one. And I reserve that right to be outraged for one reason alone: I am fucking delusional about how the Internet works.

> [Facebook] A Call For an Open, Distributed Alternative To Facebook

Slashdot -- A Call For an Open, Distributed Alternative To Facebook

qwerty8ytrewq writes "Ryan Singel, writing for Wired, claims that Facebook has gone rogue: 'Facebook used to be a place to share photos and thoughts with friends and family and maybe play a few stupid games that let you pretend you were a mafia don or a homesteader. It became a very useful way to connect with your friends, long-lost friends and family members. ... And Facebook realized it owned the network. Then Facebook decided to turn "your" profile page into your identity online ? figuring, rightly, that there?s money and power in being the place where people define themselves. But to do that, the folks at Facebook had to make sure that the information you give it was public.' Singel goes on to call for an open, distributed alternative. 'Facebook?s basic functions can be turned into protocols, and a whole set of interoperating software and services can flourish. Think of being able to buy your own domain name and use simple software such as Posterous to build a profile pag e in the style of your liking.' Can Slashdotters predict where social networking is going? And how?" Relatedly, jamie points a graphical representation of how Facebook's privacy settings have changed over the last five years.

Mashable -- Betty White's SNL Monologue Blasts Facebook [VIDEO]

Betty White hosted Saturday Night Live tonight, the result of months of campaigning by members of the Facebook page Betty White to Host SNL (please?)!. The Golden Girls star took the opportunity to both thank and ridicule her Facebook fans.

White commented in her monologue, "I really have to thank Facebook … I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time. I would never say the people on it are losers, but that's only because I'm polite. People say 'But Betty, Facebook is a great way to connect with old friends.' Well at my age, if I wanna connect with old friends, I need a Ouija Board. Needless to say, we didn't have Facebook when I was growing up. We had phonebook, but you wouldn't waste an afternoon with it."

Are you a Betty White fan on Facebook? What did you think of her monologue?
